Well, I'm a recently married horror writer, so my mood swings between the macabre and the blissful at the moment! Very confusing indeed. I've been away a month to get married and such, but will be more active again soon.

'Carrie' was King's first published novel, and the beginning of a phenomenon that continues to this day. A relatively short novel, its success lies partly in its brevity, and partly in the impressive character sketch that is the central character.
Carrie is a social misfit, a high school girl with no real friends to speak, with few social skills, and with a mother best described as a religious fanatic who sees sin everywhere. Small wonder then that Carrie is as maladjusted as she is. The result of these circumstances is a girl very similar to somebody you knew at school, the quiet girl in the corner who never seemed to get on. Therein lies much of the novel's genius. When the girls in the locker room taunt Carrie over her first period, you might well remember doing something similar to you own girl in the corner. Here you'll get a chance to see in a fresh light some of the misery you caused, and it's horrible to accept.
Of course, King is a horror writer, and puberty brings to Carrie more than her monthly flow. When she starts to develop strange telekinetic powers, moving objects through force of will alone, the stage is set for a terrifying spree of supernatural vengeance, kicked off by the cruellest prank yet, an attempt to humiliate her at the high school prom. That particular night of horror has become legend, and you might already be familiar with the bucket of pig's blood, the unfortunate death, and the monster that Carrie becomes.
Unlike most monsters though, Carrie is a girl you've watched being pushed into the corner, and when she finally pushes back it is hard to define whether you feel terrified of her, or proud. King's empathy with the character is infectious in the extreme, and you're going to catch it. This is the first of several true classics King has written, and you need a copy.

An excellent review. A very powerful debut novel from King, one that I think is very underrated because of the phenomenon of King's success since then. Ellie.

Review of Carrie - Stephen King
Advantages: A psychological thriller that will keep you turning the pages. Disadvantages: More narrative/less action than in previous Stephen King books.
Advantages: A nice gripping and readable novel ; A terrific tale of survival ; Very atmospheric ; The characters thoughts and feelings are projected well to the reader Disadvantages: Suddenly stops flowing towards the middle ; King can be slightly over obsequious towards the main character
