Stephen King - Carrie
Is there anybody out there who hasn't read (or seen the movie) Carrie yet?? I wouldn't dare to call myself a fan of Stephen King if I haven't. Not only it's his first book, published in 1974, the first of the neverending row of his bestselling novels, but it's nothing but pure horror story. I admired every aspect of it, the narrating, the dialogues, environment and characters. I think it's the characters that turned Carrie into a legend.
The storyline The beginning couldn't be more down-to-earth. We're somewhere in the eighties and the story starts through newspaper reports. We're being told about a girl who could move anything she wanted with her mind. Anything besides people's hearts. Carrie White is a loner, this kind of an unliked, disdained and occassionaly made fun of weirdo, part of that label comes thanks to her mother Margaret being a self-punishing Christian freak who tries her best to keep Carrie in her shell, for her own good, as she blindly believes. Carrie's just 16 and she's been going along with the mad mother for a while, she's accustomed herself to such a life. However, it's not possible to tie a young mind forever and soon Carrie's about to step into real life, shall her mother like it or not.
We start innocently, in girls' shower room after a P.E. class, the perfect moment for Carrie to start her first ever period and being the last one to notice. Not to mention she doesn't even have a clue what's the blood about. Imagine the girls run amuck and humiliate the poor girl, who's eventually saved by the P.E.teacher. As Carrie confronts her mother about the stuff, we get more of an insight into Carrie's earlier childhood and Margaret upbringing methods, none of those very pretty. Not to mention there's been funny stuff reported around the Whites every now and then.
It's gonna be the prom night soon and despite all the "good" advice from Margaret, Carrie is determined to go and it could seem like the waypoint of her life's coming. The ugly duckling's taken the life into her hands and a swan is emerging, she's even got this handsome date to take her to the prom ball. You'd think there was enough cruelty and the happy end is coming, but that's not what happening, not at all. A sick plot was arranged against Carrie and when she's under the spotlights on the stage, being titled the queen of the prom, something happens. It's not just a prank, more like a heartless merciless assault of bunch of people who decided to destroy Carrie White once and for all. I think she'd have coped with the "joke", if it wasn't everybody else join her tormentors' side and laugh at her. When she needed help most, everybody just laughed. Most of them laughed till the end of their lives, as Carrie's mind made a flex and wouldn't let anybody run off. She went on a killing spree through the whole town like an angel of black death and finally turned against her mother in the end. There is no happy end, I only tell you so much. Carrie's dead as well as most people who have hurt her, but the story will be carried on, you'll see.
My opinion The novel is a collage of newschips and real-time story full of cruelty, injustice and people manipulating one another without considering the impact of their deeds. It's a charge against mercilessness, crudity and ignorance. The book is a raw portrait of what negligence can do to one young soul.

Review of Carrie - Stephen King
Advantages: A psychological thriller that will keep you turning the pages. Disadvantages: More narrative/less action than in previous Stephen King books.
Advantages: A nice gripping and readable novel ; A terrific tale of survival ; Very atmospheric ; The characters thoughts and feelings are projected well to the reader Disadvantages: Suddenly stops flowing towards the middle ; King can be slightly over obsequious towards the main character
