All of us (or most of us anyway) have never lost that ‘childlike’ part of ourselves. Well, I don’t think I have anyway as why else would I watch this channel? Is it the child in me or is it the fact that my 5 year old has progressed away from the likes of Barney the dinosaur? Most likely the latter! There are a wide rang of programmes on this channel, some old and well known, some quite new. Here are a few of the ones we tend to watch – or should I say the ones my kids force me to watch.

Tom and Jerry – an all time classic. The adventures of Tom the cat, Jerry the mouse and Butch the dog. The majority of the time, all three are at loggerheads, fighting, hitting each other with whatever comes to hand – fisticuffs in general. You do get the odd occasion when they get on but it invariably returns to fisticuffs at the end. I can’t believe that some TV watchdog wanted this programme banned because of the violence! Oh, pleeeaaase! It’s a cartoon! Get a life!

The Cramp Twins – a relatively new show to the channel. It revolves around unlikely twins Wayne (who just happens to be a strange blue/purple colour) and Lucian – he seems to be the more ‘normal’ of the two. The two of them are always up to something, trying to get one over on the other – pretty much like normal, everyday brothers. Put together with a mother who is obsessed with cleanliness and a father who doesn’t really seem to do much, it’s quite a good show.

Dexter’s Laboratory – the story of Dexter, an exceptionally intelligent young kid. So intelligent that he has a laboratory set up in a secret part of his bedroom – not just any lab though, a huge extensive one. He has a sister called Dee-Dee – a really irritating girl who knows about the laboratory in her brother’s room but keeps it secret from their parents after a heck of a lot of blackmail from Dexter. It makes me wonder about the parents – they have no idea bout the lab – are they thick or just plain stupid?

The Powerpuff Girls – where would I be without these? My 5 year old adores them. They are Bubbles, Buttercup and Blossom – created by their ‘father’ the professor. He created them in a lab using all the ‘sugar and spice and all things nice’ stuff but accidentally knocked in ‘ingredient X’ which turned them into the all girl super heroine trio. They each have their own special powers and no matter what evil gangster or scary monster enters the area called Townsville, the Powerfuff girls have the know how and the power to get rid. A generally feel good cartoon – good always conquers evil.

Angela Anaconda – when I fist saw this, I was a bit bemused. To me, it loos like cut outs from magazines, but the strange thing is, it looks like they’ve used actual human body bits as well. They eyes of the characters and the mouths are human which actually makes it seem a bit creepy. The characters are as follows –
Angela Anaconda – the main character – quite bright, always in conflict with…..
Nanette Manoir – the ‘it’ girl of the show. Thinks she knows it all, wears the latest designer gear etc etc. affectionately known by Angela as ‘ninny poo’.
Johnny Abarti – the Italian character – I don’t really know much about him except that his dad is a bit of an Elvis reincarnation.
Gordy Reinhardt – a bit of a weedy specimen – the ‘geek’ of the show. A bit of a disappointment to his dad which is the schools sports coach (Gordy is not in any way sports minded)
Gina Lash – a girl after my own heart! The Jewish character in the show. A short, plump girl who loves her food – no matter what food is put in front of her, she’ll happily shovel it down. Occasionally gets the mick taken, but takes no notice.
Mrs.Brinks (I thinks that how you spell it) – the school teacher who seems like she always seems to be sucking a lemon. She does her best, but has definite favourites – the main one being Nanette ‘ninny poo’ Manoir.

These are by no means the main bulk of the channel. There are other programmes including Scooby Doo and The Flintstones – another two favourites from my childhood. Others include Johnny Bravo, Dragonball Z (we don’t watch these as they are ‘boy’ programmes as my daughter call them) and countless others.

With a lot of channels on digital TV, the programmes are shown on a rotation basis. There are a set amount of programmes which are shown, and then when they come to the end of the run, its back to the start again. With cartoon network, this isn’t so. There is a continuous run of cartoons – from what I’ve seen, there aren’t many (if any) that are repeated in the day. The only ones I seem to see a lot of the same are things like Tom and Jerry – big an old cartoon, there are limited ones they can show.
Every now and then, they’ll show a 2 hour bloc of a certain programme – I’m not sure how they decide which one it will be – I think this weekend, they’re showing a 2 hour block of Angela anaconda on Saturday around midday.
On the whole, it’s a good channel for the kids (and adults) and certainly in our house, it keeps the kids quiet while I’m getting the dinner ready which isn’t a bad thing is it?

Like a lot of the kid’s channels, they have a website – www.cartoonnetwork.co.uk – I have had a quick look at it but haven’t looked at it in any depth – because of this; I can’t go into any detail as to what’s on the site. I would say from what I remember, there is a lot to look at – the majority of the shows have their own ‘bit’ so it’s worth taking a look.

No doubt, later on today when my daughter gets home from school, we will be watching our daily intake of Angela anaconda and the rest of them – actually, I’m rather looking forward to it!
