The first time I saw a Casio S600 I was amazed at its size. A tiny, slim little thing which still had a zoom, good quality picture taking and even the ability to record videos, all in a tiny, modern and very cool little package! Now I'm not usually one too get excited over things such as digital cameras - Gucci bags, yes, shoes, possibly, but a camera? Usually a disposable will do me, but once I saw this one I couldn't go back, I just had to have it!
The Technical Part ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Being not very up on all things technical, I did the next best thing (ok, silly thing) and bought the camera there and then. Well, to be fair I did go out looking for a camera, it wasn't like I had two hundred of them at home and this was just another one to add to my collection! But if you are thinking about purchasing a camera, I'm sure most people will actually want to know what it does, so here goes, I'll put it all into English afterwards for all you people out there like me who wouldn't have a clue otherwise…
2.2 inch LCD screen - this is quite a small size screen but to be fair the camera itself is tiny. I find the screen a perfect size to be able to see clearly what you are doing.
One touch buttons - The camera is altogether so easy to use - you simply push the power button on the top and you're ready to go!
6 mega-pixel CCD - Basically, the more pixels you have the better. I've looked around a few sites and 6 mega-pixels seem to be about the average for a digital camera, some are slightly higher, but there are a lot out there with less. If you are just after some good photographs and won't be blowing them up huge you will have no problems what so ever!
16.1mm thickness - This part speaks for itself! The camera is so slim that it easily fits in your pocket, and lightweight as well
Super Life Battery - this is an easy one and just means it has an extra long battery life, with you being able to take up to 300 pictures per charge, (or nearly two hours worth of video recording) - that's lot of pictures, I've never ran out of battery whilst using the camera as of yet, so it must be good!
Anti shake digital signal processor - this is a brilliant little function which basically means that blurry is almost total wiped out when taking pictures of moving objects. It's one of my favourite parts of the camera, yet at the time of selling wasn't even mentioned to me!
The camera also has a 3 X optical zoom.
The range ~*~*~*~*~*~
There is a wide range of Casio S600s around, in a variety of lovely colours, memory sizes and in packages including cases, extra memory and so on. I selected a sleek silver little number which I love. The camera is also available in a reddish-orange colour which is gorgeous as well, and blue.
Casio have recently updated this camera to a 7 mega-pixel version, as far as I'm aware the main difference is it being 1 mega-pixel better in photo quality than the S600. This does mean however that the price has recently dropped for the version I'm reviewing which has got to be good!
Price ~*~*~*~
The cheapest I could find this camera stocked for was from cameras2u.com, for just £138.00 which I think is an excellent deal. I paid around £220 for mine almost a year ago. The newer 7 mega-pixel version is currently being sold for around the £250 mark.
Ebay is always a good site to check out before making your final purchase, there are currently a few sellers stocking these camera, cheapest I could find there was £120 (including postage) buy it now. Looking at the auction prices, they are tending to go for about the same. Always be careful when buying off ebay, check that products are brand new with warranty, from the UK and include all accessories that would be included if bought from a store. Personally I'd rather pay the extra ten pounds to buy from an online store for peace of mind.
The verdict… ~*~*~*~*~*~*~
I highly recommend this camera! It still looks stylish to me now, a year after purchasing it, and I'm still as happy with it as the day I bought it. Being my clumsy self, I have dropped the poor camera countless amounts of times, often with the zoom lens out, but this hasn't caused any problems at all (not that I'd advise doing it!) and it's still in perfect working order.
Transferring pictures on to the computer is extremely easy and fast. The view finder on the camera is also in my opinion excellent, particularly for such a small, slim line camera.
The quality of the pictures is good - I understand that serious photographers will be after higher quality pictures and therefore this probably wouldn't be the best option for them. When you zoom in on pictures once loaded on the computer, things do get quite bitty relatively soon. However if your just after a sturdy, stylish and slim line camera for general use I think this would be perfect for you!
Advantages: Big screen, great battery length, fast transfer, excellent photo quality and build Disadvantages: No optical view-finder. Specific type battery.
...fantastic.
I took my Casio EX-S600 away on holiday with me. Because of it's perfect size it was in my pocket for the entire duration of the holiday. It was at hand at the most convenient moments and because of that I managed to capture some of the best on-the-fly images.
The menus are so easy to use and a manual isn't really necessary. Even upgrading the firmware, which is normally a scary process due to the ability of wiping the internal software ... ...go into the menus, and Casio have done a good job by giving the ability to program buttons to do this.
The large screen on the back is perfect for lining up shots. I do think however that not having an optical view-finder, not to mention not having the ability to switch off this screen to save battery, is one of this cameras not-so-good points. Also, the camera takes a specific type of rechargeable battery, which means if you are out and not near ...

Advantages: Ultra-Slim Design, 6 Mega-Pixel Camera, Great Spec. Disadvantages: No Viewfinder
One thing is assured...this camera has serious wow factor!! Compare it with pretty much the entire digital camera population and its thinner, more stylish and of a better specification for the price. This camera, of which I have one, contantly astounds my chunky-camera owning friends.
As any reader of this article is no doubt aware, there are a vast number of cameras available on the market nowadays. So what, exactly, made me choose this one?
I ... ...Basically put, the more mega-pixels, the better quality the photo ends up becoming!! And, considering I was out to buy a great camera, nothing less that 5 Mega-pixels would suffice.
My second criteria was size. This camera is very much a companion. It's what I'd call a social snappers camera. Its so thin, it'll easily fit into your jeans when you go clubbing or to a party, being only slightly larger than a credit card and about double the thickness ...

Advantages: Small, Pocket sized, Fast, Quality for a compact Disadvantages: Possibly lack of manual settings
I bought the camera in summer 2006 on the recommendation of a shop assistant, and I have been very pleased with the purchase.
Compact, stylish yet retaining quality in picture taking, the S600 has to be up there with the best compact cameras around. For those who want a camera to easily take to parties, this does the trick. Being a university student I am constantly taking pictures of nights out, and it is very easy to simply slip the camera into ... ...you think that, because it is compact, this camera is only for party usage, I also took this camera with me to the Lake District in September, and up the 10 highest mountains in England without any kind of problems, and got some incredible photos out of it along the way. The BESTSHOT features also come in useful, both for novelty value, because everyone likes some fun features to play about with, turning your friends sepia and all that, but also ...

Advantages: Good Picture Quality, Takes Video Disadvantages: Looses charge easily
I have owned this camera since recieving it as a gift 2 years ago and have loved it since!
The camera itself is easy on the eyes, its a nice chrome silver and size wise, it fits perfectly in any small pocket / case.
The most important thing, picture quiality, does not disappoint either. It has a 3x optical zoom which is plenty to provide high quality pictures. It needs to additional software to load pictures onto computer. Just plug in the cable ... ...The charger is again very simple and acts a docking station also for the camera. The battery life is very good, only small problem is it appears to loose charge if not used for a while. If it is put away fully charged and not used for a few weeks, it will need recharging before it can be used again.
The camera takes most SD cards also allowing its memory to be extended however large you would like. It can also do video. Up to 30mins of footage can ...

Advantages: small reliable hi quality pics works in extremes fits in jeans pocket Disadvantages: everyone gets one after they see yours
I have had this brilliant little camera for almost a year, I carry it virtually everyday and as a consequence have been lucky enough to capture many of those "if only we had a camera moments". For which a few people are less than thankful.
It will fit in a cigarette packet in case you forget the dust cover
I have used it in Canada for a couple of months on an adventure packed stay even at 8000 feet up at minus 40 in light snow whist snow mobiling, ... ...was better than a couple of video recorders on the same trip. It has been rain soaked twice and has had a pint spilled over it -sticky but cleaned up OK, still working as new.
Its been dropped a few times as well, luckily not even a scratch!
I bought this from cameras2u.co.uk where I repeatedly have good service unbeatable prices and peace of mind. They had the best deal I could find in Europe the week I bought it.
