of the cost of original manufacturers and can be used in many makes and models of digital device. Rechargeable digital batteries are rated in "mAh" which stands for "milli-ampere hours". This rating is used to state the storage capability of a battery, e.g. a 1000mAh battery would be capable of delivering 1000mA of current consistently for one hour whereas a 2000mAh battery would deliver the same 1000mA of current for two hours. Li-on rechargeable digital batteries can deliver 40% more capacity than comparably sized NiCd batteries and weigh less than the nickel-based batteries and develop no memory effect. Advantages: Slim, stylish, large LCD screen, good image performance Disadvantages: Inconvenient docking station, AVI movie mode
As a non-camera using techie, I was shopping around for something fairly simple, fairly slick, fairly small and very functional. I got all of that in spades.
I was looking at the Pentax Optio S range, the Cannon IXUS range, the Fuji Z1 and Z2 and the Sony Cyber-Shot cameras also. I didn't even think of looking at Casio. They make calculators, don't they?

Anyway, on to the review.
I bought the z500 a week ago, with a 512Mb SD card and a carrying case. Initially, after just playing around with it for a few minutes and taking test photos of my feet, I was impressed. The auto-focus was quick and pretty quiet, the screen was beautiful in all lights, the menu system was intuitive, the installation on my PC was painless and the photos looked beautiful. The software bundled with the camera was pretty ropey, but by using the import function on software such as Picasa it is easily done without.
Two nights ago I took the camera on its first big outing. A bowling alley for a family party full of screaming and running children. The z500 held up admirably, the photos looking excellent. the only remaining issue is to become a better photographer to keep up with the camera!
The down-side to the z500 is twofold. Firstly, to output the photos to either a PC or to a TV, the docking station is essential. This is not a small piece of kit either. This may be a problem going on holiday or sharing photos with friends, but a big enough memory card should see you straight. Or a bigger suitcase.
The other issue is with the movie mode. Not with the quality - that is excellent - but with the format. the camera records in moving JPEG (AVI) format. This is bulky to say the least. MPEG4 encoding is becoming more the norm, as well it should, and it would have been nice to fit more that 10 minutes video on a 512Mb SD card.
That said, I bought the camera for still shots, and at that it is virtually perfect.
Advantages: great when you first get it Disadvantages: you are ready for a new one after 3-6 months
...I will give this Casio satisfactory, and the benefit of the doubt - maybe I had a bad one. If you want crazily complex features (that you will never use) in a small camera with 'ok at the time' pic quality and a startup time that is only just a little bit too long, choose this..
If you really need all the features it gives you, you are probably a professional who wouldn't look at this camera anyway! CASIO! Study Nikon's auto scenario modes and copy ...
