I bought this calculator a fair while ago now- it must be about three years as I bought it for the start of my GCSEs as it was recommended as a good calculator for this stage of mathematics.
I think I paid around £12 at WHSmith for this calculator but I have heard that you can get it very cheap on the internet- I even heard of a friend that got it for £3 at some place on the world wide web! (Possibly ebay?)
This product is very compact and thin which makes it great for just slipping into your school bag and it has a slide on case which protects the screen..although I have actually lost this as you aren't allowed to take the case into official examinations in case you write some sort of equation on them or something? And I have misplaced it since then.
The buttons on the calculator are very easy to use, you don't need to press them too hard or stab at them to get them to work which is always a positive and they don't accidently press when you only touch them lightly which is also a good thing. The button faces are actually very ergonomic as your finger seems to fit onto them very nicely and they have a sort of 'soft touch' feel to them. The buttons themselves are mainly black or navy with bold white writing which are easily readable which is useful.
This calculator can carry out all the tasks that you will need for a GCSE Maths exam including standard form ( the X 10 to the power of x button) and basic trigonometry questions involving cos, tan and sin and also the inverse of these functions! Another REALLY great feature which is available on this calculator and not on some other similar models is the fact that you can easily convert decimals to fractions and vice versa by using the (S to D) button. This is so useful in exams and means that you don't have to remember what your fractions are in decimal forms (at least not for the calculator paper anyway...)
I reckon this calculator is pretty robust as I am quite rubbish at looking after my possessions and this is always rattling around in my bag and hasn't broken as of yet. However my brother also has one and has managed to break his screen by stabbing it with a compass... so as long as you don't do something stupid like that I am sure it will be fine!
All in all, this is a brilliant calculator for pre GCSE and GCSE maths as it includes everything you will need. If you are planning on going on to further level maths in A level or similar then I would recommend also getting a more complex (and unfortunately a lot more expensive) graphical calculator as there will be some useful functions on these type of calculators (like solving quadratic equation and drawing out graph transformations etc.) that you cannot do on the Casio fx-83EX. But even now, at university, i still keep this calculator as it is so easy to use and has useful functions that you sometimes don't even get on the very expensive calculators!
I would definitely recommend this product!
Another last note is to say that to be honest, you don't even need to bother with the instruction manual as it is so simple to use and it is a commonly used calculator in schools so the teachers are bound to know how to do everything!
Advantages: Easy to use, great natural display Disadvantages: None!
This is a really useful scientific calculator, and I'm glad i managed to get my hands on one! It's fairly inexpensive, very easy to use and the natural display helps lay things out well.
LOOK:
This calculator looks just how a scientific calculator should; sleek and well designed, but with enough funny symbols to make einstein ponder. The natural display is great. You can display fractions and roots, even frequency tables easily on the screen.
... ...to master this calculator, so I'd say it's pretty easy to use! The manual is easy to follow as well.
It has a fantastic stats mode; you can see frequency tables layed out on the screen, and at the press of two quick buttons you can get standard deviation, root-mean-squared deviation, and any expression from within the formulae!
All the simple functions are easy to find and use aswell, so it doesn't have to be used for fancy equations.

Advantages: Easy to use, large screen, large buttons Disadvantages: not solar powered
The Casio FX 83 ES is a definite must have for all those taking GCSEs or A levels. Although the Casio FX 83 ES is a little more expensive then most other calculators on sale, the Casio FX 83 ES is capable of everything from the standard addition and subtraction to more complex things like trigonometry and algebra. The case is very slim so the calculator does not take up a lot of space in bags or pockets while at the same time being very durable and ... ...The only disadvantage with the Casio FX 83 ES is that it is not solar powered however the batteries used can easily be found for sale at DIY shops and even major supermarkets. The instruction booklets that are supplied are very useful because not only do they teach you how to use the calculator there is also an appendix also teaches you both simple and complex mathematical operations. All in all this calculator is perfect for those doing GCSEs and ...

I have been using this product for a long time now and I have to say that it has never let me down!
It is a stylish piece of equipment with great ergonomics and a very easy to read display.
I have to highly recommend this product for any students undertaking their GCSEs or higher - it is a scientific calculator so is ideal for courses such as A level chemistry.

...but I have had another Casio calculator and that has served me well too. Not the smallest of calculators but are very mathematical and are brilliant for working out the difficult equasions and sums and are useful for key stage 3 exams, GCSE's, A level's etc. I will not be changing my calculator unless the battery runs out. From my opinion, Casio are very reliable and so is this calculator. It looks good and just has a good feel about it. Once you ...

Advantages: User-friendly, natural display, long-lasting batteries Disadvantages: Probably can be confusing for inexperienced mathematicians
I have now owned the Casio fx-83ES for many years, it's gotten me through my GCSEs, my A-Levels and is still going strong now I'm halfway through my Maths degree! This calculator has all the functions you will need to complete practically any Maths qualification, and plenty more to boot.

I have been using the Casiofx-83ES calculator since my Gcse's and it has never let me down yet. With a natural large display screens and a huge array of features the calculator is one of the best budget calculators your money can buy. It lets you do multiple sums such as sin cos tan and for when students get to A levels Logs. One thing you must do before you start using it , is check that it is in the right mode which was the only problem I occured but if you just have a scan through the instructions it's easy days. I would recommend this calculator to anyone from Gcse / A Level students to your average family for there needs. Available in most stores and on the high street check it out at WHSmith or Argos which usually do it cheaper at around £7 ...
