Scientific Calculator

Advantages: Easy to use, reliable, batteries last AGES!
Disadvantages: No solar panel to back up batteries

I first got this calculator when I was 13 or 14 years old. Our maths teacher told us we needed a scientific calculator and although I already had one, it was different to the one the teacher had. The teacher told us we could buy one through school and this way we would all have the same calculator. Normally it wouldn’t bother me if I was different but in this instance I wanted one the same, as calculations are sometimes worked out slightly differently ...
...it happily in many lessons and exams since I first bought it.

~ What is a Scientific Calculator? ~

A scientific calculator is a more complex calculator than the usual calculator you may use. Scientific calculators support mathematical functions such as trigonometry, statistics, algebra and scientific notation.

Casio fx-83MS

Advantages: simple, easy to use
Disadvantages: outdated

This is the Casio FX 83MS Scientific Calculator, for typical use at high school level. This is what you need to keep up in maths at school at GCSE level and beyond. The extra functions of a scientific calculator are necessary for this level of work and are still useful even if you just want to use a calculator simply. Anyway, that applies for any scientific calculator, now what about this one? This is a Casio which is a good sign straight off. Casio ...
...many different versions of the Casio scientific calculator and most are very much the same with a few modifications every now and again. This is the one I have at hand so it's this one I am reviewing. The calculator has a ten figure display screen with the ability to hold up to around 75 characters in the top half of the screen where you type in your problem. With many different modes this calculator is advanced enough to get you through your GCSEs, ...

Mathematical miracles

Advantages: easy to use, stylish case, durable, good make
Disadvantages: strange battery type

...off i have owned my casio FX 83 MS for 5 years and it is still going strong on the same battery and without any problems exept a slightly worn case. This calculator takes a lot of abuse from me as i use it frequently and have a tendency to drop things on hard surfaces! This treatment has never phased it though and it still keeps on making mathematical miracles happen everytime i use it. The calculator has all the usual nice friendly maths signs like ...
...1-9 and 0. It also has a handy Ans (answer) key so that you can insert the answer to your previous problem into the next problem without typing it all out in full ( very handy if you have a number with lots of decimal places!) It is, however, also a scientific calculator so it has scary buttons on it too! I won't pretend to know what all of these do but it has trigonometric functions, scientific notation, and lots of other weird and wonderful maths ...

Advantages: cheap, good basic calculator for A levels or GCSEs
Disadvantages: not solar powered

I got this calculator for my 10-year-old niece as she wanted to start using a calculator to do harder sums. Her mental arithmetic is quite good, so I assume she didn’t want it to cheat on homework or anything ! It is very easy to use and the packaging suggests “Ideal for Key Stage 3, age 11 years and over.” However, my 10-year-old niece was using it quite easily!! S-VPAM (super visually perfect algebra method) logic allows sums to be entered as ...
...sum and answer simultaneously, which is always useful! There are 240 functions in total. However, the average joe would probably only use a small fraction of these! The main statistical and trigonometric functions are on this calculatir making it a good basic calculator for GCSE and A levels. Batteries are included as unfortunately this calculator is not solar powered. However, calculators don’t really use that much power, so I assume the battery ...

Number Happy

Advantages: Robust, Cheap and Chunky
Disadvantages: No hex mode

...the standards of my old Casio which I've had since school days. DESIGN The size and shape I find are perfect. It's not fiddly and the buttons are hard plastic, not rubber. Rubber buttons are easily pulled out during moments of extreme frustration. The buttons on this will survive such episodes. The cover slides off the front and slides onto the back while the calculator is in use - this saves you from losing it. Although I have wasted time looking ...

Casio fx-115 MS

Advantages: Integration and Differentiaiton features
Disadvantages: None that stand out

This is a great calculator and is a real step up from the casio fx-83 MS which is the calculator I had previously. It has all the features of the typical scientific calculator and all the keys are in the same place as the fx-83 and the other casios. However, to make this calculator stand out from the rest is the fact that it can solve quadratic equations adn also differentiate and integrate. If you have ever had problems integrating etc. or you want to check you answers to integration/differentiation in the exam, then this calculator will find the solutions for you. At first, it isquite difficult to find the solutions quickly, although once you know how to use the functions, you'll be able to differentiate and integrate in seconds. The solar-powered feature alongside the normal battery means that it is pretty impossible for this ...
