I was loaned the fx-9750G by my school whilst doing my A-Level maths course. It seemed most unfair, as only those doing double maths were allowed one of these beauties. However, I soon realised the reason for this. It takes a super-brain of Further-Maths-A-Level proportions to actually figure out how to work the thing.
For starters, there seemed to be about three or four buttons explaining what seemed to be, on a linguistic synonymic level, 'BACK', but all carried out subtly different functions. To start with I just often hit the off button then started again from scratch. Thank goodness for it's memory!
However, with time, I have slowly become acquainted with this 80s-styled beast, and I am the first to admit that the fx-9750G was playing hard-to-get at first ; it's now well worth getting to know it for the rewards.
Short of writing the answers to your maths paper, there is nothing this machine cannot do. Solving matrices, finding asymptotes of graphs, solving simultaneous equations, quadratics... the list goes on. It's hard to guess at how many marks / UMS points the "...G" has gained me, or how much time it has saved - it's certainly compensated for the hours getting to know its functions. You can draw graphs, do all sorts of stats functions as well as performing all the operations you'd expect of a normal scientific calculator.
Aparantly you can link it up to another friendly fx-9750G, presumably for double the mathematical genius, though i'm not sure how that helps in real life. The manual is comprehensive - hundreds of pages in length - which is quite offputting - to be honest i prefer the trial and improvement (excuse the pun) method.
Certainly I wouldnt recommend getting this calculator to take to an exam in a week. But if you're just starting A level in maths, it might just be worth the tenner it costs on ebay. Also it's quite fun to draw pictures with, if you're a real maths geek!
