The Casio fx-9750G is the calculator I now use at college. It seems to be the standard calculator to use now at AS and A level, as I know other sixth forms other than my college who now solely sell these to their students.
The look and layout : - The Casio fx-9750G is a quite chunky calculator with dimesnsion of 178mm x 89mm x 21mm, as one might expect of a graphic calculator, but it is not unnattractive to the eye. It comes in an assortment of colours, mine being green, but all (that I know of) have a white cover and front surface. The calculator has some attractive, if pointless, curves in its body, but to be honest, when choosing a calculator I don't think look should have a great deal of influence. The layout of the calculator is very good. The screen, dimensions 36mm x 62mm, give ample room to carry out calculations and is positioned at the top of the calculator. From there the buttons are extremely well layed out, with plenty of room between button and good labelling of each button. The buttons have mutliple functions, but each function is colour coded and therefore it is easy to distinguish between functions.
Features : - The fx-9750G can do all the functions that a normal calculator can as you would expect. As a graphic calculator however, it gives so much more than this. It can be used to draw graphs and make lists on the calculator. Any equation can be programmed in and the resultant graph can be drawn(as long as it has a graph!) and you can then 'trace' the graph which means you can simply pick any point on the graph and see its co-ordinates. It can be used for stats - with standard deviation, mean, quartiles and anything else you could possibly want to know easy to discover. Matrices, tables, simultaneous equations and much more can all be made and solved on this calculator. It has 15 'modes' e.g. 'graph', 'list', 'equation', conics' and more which shows its fantastic diversity. It is a calculator perfect for almost all mathematical and graphical functions and has a very easy-to-use menu, which allows for easy navigation anywhere through the calculator. I am doing maths and further maths at A level and it is a perfect calculator for anything of this standard and should be useful to me for the rest of my life, it may be awkward to learn how to use it but this is not the calculator's fault in my opinion but because maths is in parts a very confuding subject, however it is capable of doing almost anything that a mathematician could desire!
Instruction Manual : - The Casio comes with an incredibly thick manual which is in my opinion simply impossible to read through and let's face it quite depressing. However, it is well layed out, so it is easy to find and learn about a particular partof the calculator you want help with. I'm not sure how good the customer support is as I have never had a problem with my calculator but as Casio is a very well known brand I would expect it at least to be reasonable.
Durability and Maintenance : - The Casio fx-9750G is extremely durable. Mine is over 3 years old and still functioning to its full capacity. The calculator itself is very sturdy and strong and can withstand a certain amount of damage, such as being dropped from small heights without suffering lasting damage. It runs on 4AAA batteries which last a very long time, I haven't had to replace mine yet and also the calculator comes with its own back-up battery, if you forget to replace the AAA's. That is all the maintenance I can think of, I have never had a problem with mine and I would recommend it to any student doing maths or anyone else who fancies doing some maths!
The price of my calculator was around £30 punds through my college but you may need to pay more as they give colleges special prices. However, ebay may be a good place to look if this seems to pricy for you, although I think you may find this a very reasonable price for a graphic calculator.
