Decent Sony for the money
Advantages: Number of features Disadvantages: Only single deck record, and pretty noisy
Its true, I don't think anyone really uses cassettes anymore. But a cassette player was the only device missing from my hifi set up, so when I saw this in my local town I thought I might as well get it...then I could listen again to all those dusty tapes that were now packed away in a box.
The good thing about this device is it has two tape drives. This means that you can copy from one cassette to another. Handy if you have a recording of a radio ... ...out. However, you can only record on one of the decks, not both. You eventually get used to this though, and its rare that you need two copies of the same thing anyway.
Each deck has an electronic counter that is easy to reset whenever you want. The rewind feature can also be set to stop rewinding when the counter reaches zero. This is very useful when you don't want to go right back to the start again.
For some reason there is a speed control ...

Avoid if you want consistent sound quality!
Advantages: Twin auto reverse. Easy to use. Relay play etc Disadvantages: Sound quality varies due to badly designed auto-reverse system
This is the worst quality cassette deck I have ever owned.
The sound quality can vary slightly each time you play a cassette and it also depends on the direction (auto reverse) and which deck you are using.
The problem is the way the auto reverse is implemented.
The heads are rotated to play one side of the cassette, and not rotated for the other side. And they don't seem to hit the rotation 'end stop' quite right sometimes, which means the heads ...

Talk To Yourself!
Advantages: Easy to operate with one hand Disadvantages: Design covering tape window
...Argos catalogue I saw the Sanyo TRC-525M and as it was a reasonable price I decided to go for it, as I also knew the client I was audio typing for would be using the cassettes that fitted into this machine.
Once out of the small but sturdy cardboard box packaging, I was presented with the dictaphone, which resembled a neat little black brick. Its measurements are roughly 12cm x 7cm and about 2.5cm thick. This is an ideal shape and thickness to fit ... ...operate the controls with just your thumb. Obviously I have to keep picking it up and putting it down in between typing the last sentence I hear, but with the controls all in one place, in a cluster at the end of the machine, it is very practical.
There is a clear plastic flap on the face of the dictaphone, which you can just lift up by a small tab on the edge to insert the cassette, and I do sometimes find this a tiny bit fiddly. Both lifting the ...

Great sounding cassette recorder
Advantages: Great sound quality, good set of features, three heads Disadvantages: No remote control
Many people seem to think that cassette tapes, and analogue audio in general, have had their day. For me though, I have so many cassettes that converting them to a digital format is impractical, and buying CD copies or paying to download them, too expensive. Unfortunately, the quality of cassette decks in most mini-hifi systems these days is very poor - the cynic in me wonders if this is a deliberate ploy to stimulate sales of CD recorders and other ... ...the grand sum of £10 second hand. I believe it retailed for under £100 new, though I suspect it has been discontinued now.
I will begin with the playback side of things. When I first started using this machine, I suddenly found myself listening to lots of old pre-recorded cassettes I had not dug out for years. OK, so they were not quite "CD quality", but very enjoyable to listen to nonetheless, and about as good as the cassette format will ever ...
