As a hair dye virgin-buying my first ever hair dye kit I have to admit, I was excited. And optimistic. Unpacking my "Iced Chocolate" hair dye kit which is infact about 4-5 shades lighter than my actual hair colour (a trick Ive been told so not to make your hair look darker after treatment). Unknown to me was a *HUGE* disappointment.
Ive been "blessed" ive been told with immesnly dark brown hair-so dark most people say its black (its not black damn it! =]). A nightmare when you've got lilly white skin as im sure you'll understand. Its why I never wear black! So, sick of the ever constant goth staring back at me, I thought I'd treat both myself and my boyfriend to a new colour.
I followed the instructions pretty much to the letter. Before I bought l'oreal casting I did hear that if you have medium to long hair then one box wouldn't be enough. I however have very -very- long hair but found that one box was more than enough to sustain me-so much in fact that I didnt use all of the mix even though the instructions said. But then I was absoultely covered in the stuff-not to mention my bath robe, floor and mirror. It can be *alittle*messy if not handled properly.
To mix the dye is so simple and literally involves just placing the smaller bottle which contains the dye into the top of the larger condtioning mix which is big enough so that you can place the smaller bottle into the larger without fear of it falling out. Shake the mixture and -VOILA- you're ready to go and start applying to your hair.
20 minutes later and its time to wash it out. Ive so excited to see if its made a difference that I actually blow-dry my hair for once. No difference. Staying optimistic I sleep on it to see if the dye will settle. No difference. Well-I can see the *slighest* difference when im standing in a blinding light and I can see the lighter brown highlights now in my hair-but then this only happens in a bright light, and Im the only one who can see it. So now im thinking "well that was a waste of £7"-but all is not lost-my boyfriend comes round and actual sees a difference in my hair. The conversation went alittle like this:
bf: Hey have you 2one something to your hair me (alittle optimistic): yeah? why does it look different? bf: well it feels different-its very soft (I use2 ALOT of the conditioner for after treatment that came in the kit but there was still tons left) and it looks abit shinier. Hmm..well i suppose it looks abit darker
-*WHAT?!?!*-
I had actually thought this right after I had blown-dry and have done ever since. Even though alot of people thought it looked black, at least before now and again even without blinding lights you could tell it was in fact brown =[
So-in conclusion I was VERY impressed with how soft the conditioner in this kit made my hair and how simple and easy it was to use. I am majorly disappointed in its colour. I have a friend who has a much lighter natural hair colour than me who has used this and has found it satisfactory as you could see that was a difference-though it was very subtle and rather than completely cover your hair, it keeps very subtle undertones. Nice agree-but not what you want to you actually want to change the colour of your hair. My advice: If you've got light to medium hair give it ago. darker hair-save yourself the heartache and money trying to find a hair dye that will actually give results. Go to a hairdressers. Its what im going to do =]

Great review - I'm sorry this didn't work for you. I have very dark hair too - and frankly, if you want to go a lighter colour you'll have to use a permenant colour or, as someone already mentioned - yes a pre-lightener (although I wouldn't recommend that if you like your hair to feel soft!!). I actually like to dye my hair darker (like black instead of dark brown) and semi-permenant colours are great for that.
