Castor Oil, made from the pressed seeds of the plant ricinus communis, is a yellowish thick oil, available for little money from your chemist.
When I had my first split ends - my granny gave me a bottle of castor oil. When I had constipation - granny just pointed to the castor oil.
Since over 30 years (when my first split end appeared) I always have a bottle of castor oil in the house. Just in case.
Does it work? Well... It definitely cured my constipation a few times. But it took ages until I was able to swallow this horrible stuff. And nowadays I'd rather eat spinach or a senacot pill than a tablespoon of the unpleasant castor oil. Only in very hard cases I'll go and fetch my hidden bottle.
Granny's sister used castor oil each week as a hair-cure. I must admit, she had beautiful shiny hair until she popped her cloggs with 67. I tried it on my hair once, but the smell isn't very pleasant and I had trouble to wash it out of my hair. No idea how Auntie Maria dealt with it.
Castor Oil is used for skin-condition and even for coming into early labour. I never tried either, because my skin is okay and I've never been pregnant.
Is Castor Oil a magic cure?
It helps with constipation, but you have to be able to swallow it. That's the problem. And I personally can not recommend it as a haircure.

I
think
I would just dab a little on the very tips of the hair, then brush gently and let the oil soak in. My hair is quite fine, but can be dry and tends towards split ends sometimes ~ ~ ~ ~ I cannot remember ever swallowing castor oil, but as I have heard of it, I suppose SOMEone in the family must have swallowed it? There were eight of us children, after all ~ ~ ~ ~ I know we soaked things in "Epson Salts" (another old remedy for infection and strains) ~ ~ ~ ~ I recommend basil (dried herb) tea as a anti-spasmotic herbal remedy for hangover, monthly cramps, cough, congestion, vomiting & diarrhoea, whooping cough, and migraine ~ another "cure-all" substance! ~ ~ ~ ~ and H2O2 (hydrogen peroxide) to clean wounds and stave off anaerobic germs like MRSA and other nasties that don't like oxygen to live ~ ! ♥♥ ! ~ ........................................................... ~ jes ~ ! ♥♥ !

Ewww I hated having to swallow castor oil as a child
Advantages: Cheap, great for your health, natural, can adjust quantities in skin care Disadvantages: None really - some people may be sensitive to it, but it's rare
