OK, Yet another review on engine oil, I know I do tend to do these, but you keep reading them so you only have yourselves to blame.

I have done a few reviews on Castrol, because I like the stuff, and because I believe it is good value for money, this review is on the GTX brand, sold under the Magnatec label, in it's 10w-40 version.
I will just explain what these figures mean, sorry if you have heard this before but so many people just go for the one with the fancy Logo on the can.

The first figure - "10W" - means that the oil can be pumped by your engine, just as well as a single-grade SAE 10 oil can be pumped. The "W" means that this oil is suitable for Winter conditions, this is because the oil is a Multigrade, and therefore suitable for all seasons. If you have a classic car which will be only started up in the Summertime, you do not need an oil witth the "W" rating. The second number, - "40" - means that the viscosity of this multigrade oil at 100°C (212°F) This is the normal operating temp for the average engine at an average driving period.

For anyone who needs all the specs, this oil complies with the following criteria:-
API SL/CF
ACEA A3/B3
VW 505 00
MB 229.1

This type of Magnatex GTX is suitable for Petrol engines, including ones fited with Turbochargers, as well as normally aspirated engines. If yours is a Diesel, you will need Castrol GTD,

According to Castrol's adverts, "Magnatec" combines Intelligent Molecules with part synthetic technology for a stronger layer of protection. Castrol Magnatec keeps the car at it's peak for longer. The name "Magnatec" suggesting the oil is magnetic, making it stick to the metal parts of your engine, even after a long cool down. Although that isn't strictly true, the oil will remain in bearings & moving parts a bit longer, so it is supposed to be a good thing.

It is supposed to provides more protection than other oils, especially during the critical start up period, This is because 90% of your engine wear, occurs during the first 10% of the driving time. In Winter the problem is worse.
This oil is designed to cling to your engine parts, forming a layer that will protect your engine during the start up period and beyond.
It's also meant to chemically "bond" to all metal parts, making engines more resistant to wear.
It also provides protection against different driving conditions and styles.

For all of us that are concerned about the environment, check out the website,
http://www.castrol.co.uk
Together with the information already mentioned, you will also find basic facts about oil and the environment, plus a stark warning about disposal of your old oil.
Treat your used oil properly - it can be recycled!
If you read the next paragraph, I hope it will make you think when you need to discard your old engine oil.

"One Gallon of used motor oil, can contaminate One Million Gallons of fresh water, an amount equal to one year's supply of drinking water for Fifty people."

I have deliberately left out the cost of this oil in my review, you will find it at so many different prices, I would strongly advise shopping around, you may find your local Supermarket sells it cheaper than your motor factors!

In my humble opinion, this oil is very good, I must say though, the interval between the oil change, is more important than the choice of oil actually used, OK, having decided on your oil, think about what filter to go for.

I will just finish by advising you to do your own oil changes, not that you shouldn't trust your Garage, but it is so simple to do, and you will be sure you have got rid of all the sludge that needs to come out, not just the free flowing cleaner stuff that is still doing it's job. You will also be assured that the filter is a new quality one, can you be sure of this after letting the garage do it???

Sorry about the length of this review.

Unused motor oil will also pollute water, the fact that it is used just makes the range of contaminants worse since it includes metals as well as hydrocarbons.......excellent review......Sue
