CASTROL HIGH MILES or MILE HIGH OIL! .
This brand of oil reviewed here is known as Castrol High Mileage motor oil, it is non synthetic oil, or more commonly known as a traditional mineral based oil. There are no synthetic additives added.
The viscosity of this oil is 15W-50 15 means the thickness of the oil in low temperatures, W means it complies with the requirements for winter conditions, and 50 means the thickness of the oil at high temperatures.
This newer synthetic type oil may be more suited for newer engines, but the old mineral oil is best in engines over say ten years old, or 100,000 miles, although different engine makers recommend different things nowadays. Synthetic oil has become really popular, and has been in production for many years now. The old mineral oil still has it's place though, and this particular one is designed for high mileage engines.
The advert says "Superior oil burn off protection" I will just explain what this means:- Oil Burn Off is the term used to describe what happens when the oil in an engine evaporates, this means that apart from the oil level going down, the evaporating oil leaves behind deposits which can harm your engine. The more miles an engine has done, the faster oil will burn off, this because seals deteriorate, gaskets turn brittle, and of course the piston rings wear.
The answer is of course, the use of an oil containing additives that combat this burn, and Castrol claim this oil gives 17% superior oil burn-off protection against the leading conventional oils.
Castrol is one of the best known oils in the business, and the GTX name is also known to be quality, so you will be in good hands using this oil.
If you are thinking doing your own oil change, (personally I can recommend you do, because you will then know it has been done properly) make sure you change the oil after a run, so the engine is hot, then you will drain off the sediment that turns to sludge when the engine cools. This is the stuff you need to get rid of, not the nice smooth clean oil that flows easily.
The container holds either one or five litres, it is in a plastic drum, whereas some cheaper brands are supplied in small one gallon containers. These quality Castrol containers, are easy to pour, and don't spill. Some "universal" cans are made for anything from engine oil to cooking oil, and tend to dribble a bit (don't we all).
A lot of engines over two litres require just over five litres, so be sure you have the extra litre or so before you drain the oil, it will save you scrounging a lift to your local motor shop or garage for a little top up bottle of oil.
Right, as for the price, being mineral oil, it is cheaper than synthetic, but with a name like Castrol, you do have to pay a little more, as always, shop around for the best deal.
Castrol have a website, which is pretty good. You will even find details on here about the World Rally Championship, (Castrol sponsor the Ford WRC Team) You will also be able to see the performance index for EURO 2008.
