Advantages Look pretty, are a classic snack
Disadvantages Very meh
When it comes to British based snacks most Brits look to Cadbury, though perhaps a company that has long been over looked are Welsh based O P Chocolate and their Caxton brand which produce the iconic “Pink 'n' Whites”. Sitting on the shelf in a bright pink wrapper that contains a plastic tray with 6 individual “Pink 'n' Whites”. The packaging is simple but bright and eye catching with an image of the product in the centre and plenty of well displayed sections with information on (such as a green part at the top right exclaiming “Less than 2% fat”), sounds good right? (and the image looks nice). The packaging also describes the product as “6 crunchy wafers filled with pink 'n' white mallow”, an enticing combination of wafer and marshmallow, that leaves your imagination running wild with mental ideas of pure pleasure, though does it live up to them?
In side the packet are the actual treats, they are packed with 3 on the bottom and 3 on top of them, the wafer is sharp looking with a golden colour to it, the wafers are large and incredibly thick with maybe 3-4mm from top to bottom, between two of these are the “pink and white mallow” parts. The mallow is 2 thin layers of mallow one on top of the other, they are about the same thickness as the wafer with a “sugary” looking coating and a solid (but sticky) texture to touch. When it comes to eating them the wafer seems a little disappointing as if it has too much bend to it rather than really being a crisp and crunchy wafer, and there mallow is also slightly disappointing when it comes down to the taste. Though what the product does do well is that fact that it's delightfully chewy, the mallow is really chewable, and although it perhaps lacks a strong flavour you can also pick up the sweet subtleties of taste that they have.
Overall the product is a nice idea though it seems to lack the real taste that could make the product something really special. The wafer seems a bit “too thick” whilst the mallow lacks the flavours that will really stand out for many. What the product may have with an older audience is that rare nostalgic quality of childhood that not many products can replicate. They may lack in taste but they do many up for it in character.
