Advantages: Gorgeous music, played with much passion Disadvantages: None really
symphonic aspirations.
Eugene d'Albert (1864-1932) - Cello concerto in C major Op. 20: Despite his name d'Albert was actually a Glaswegian by birth! He started his career as a pianist and was regarded by Liszt as one of his best pupils. Like Dohnányi, d'Albert was very much a Brahmsian when it came to his compositions and Brahms also greatly admired the young man's work. D'Albert only wrote one cello concerto, which he completed in 1899. Again it is a work in one movement with 3 distinct sections as in traditional concerto form. As with the Dohnányi it has an absolutely gorgeous main theme, which reappears in different guises throughout the work, culminating eventually in a wonderfully exuberant ending - much enjoyed by the orchestra in this recording.
One of the big selling points in this performance to any potential buyer is ...
Advantages: to add great music in to your collection Disadvantages: None
Steven Isserlis is an outstanding cellist. When you listen his playing alive, which I did, you can see how he captures you with his playing. I am a professional viola player for twenty years. I have listened many recordings of Bach cello suites from Rostropovich to Peter Bruns. Isserlis plays the suits in a way that you can find something different in his interpretation. Specially the 6th suit. That suit is very difficult to play actually. You should listen and hear it yourself how it flows. I have to also add the price is actually not that expensive. Because you are going to have the six suits which are usually come in two cds and plus interesting piece again by Bach , Cant del Ocells, ( Song of the Birds'). I highly recommend the cd who are interested in solo cello music, Bach or classical music. ...

Advantages: fun, social opportunity, stimulating, rewarding Disadvantages: big, difficult, not suited to the tone deaf
since the age of 8, I took Associated Board exams 2,3,5,6 and 8 and I have taught the cello since passing grade 8 in 1994 and still practice regularly. I have taken on pupils of different ages and abilities including a child with special needs who loves his cello lessons. It has also inspired me to learn more instruments myself such as the bassoon and clarinet.
Best cello recording has to be J. Du Pre with the Elgar cello concerto - timeless!
I have two cello's one is called Charlie and the other is Pablo, although I don't have a favourite, Pablo is used more for public performance as he has a brighter sound. Cellos range from around £500 to £K's so if the bank balance is suffering this may not be the right instrument for you, yet.
Strings can be expensive (for decent ones) but most city libraries will have an abundance of cello ...
