We decided on having gas central heating as thought it cheaper and also we had a gas pipe to the house from about 30 years ago albeit properly cut off.
We rang up our electric supplier and they said they would come and fit a meter and would get someone to check that we still had a gas supply after all these years. We decided on getting three quotes, two local ones, asking a neighbouring builder who he would recommend, and one of the big boys but not British Gas as heard they were expensive.

Having a coal fire is romantic but there comes a time when you have to get up to date and have central heating.
We decided on having gas central heating as thought it cheaper and also we had a gas pipe to the house from about 30 years ago albeit properly cut off.
We rang up our electric supplier and they said they would come and fit a meter and would get someone to check that we still had a gas supply after all these years. We did have, if we had not it would have been about £400 to get it.
The next was to decide who to get to do the central heating. We decided on getting three quotes, two local ones, asking a neighbouring builder who he would recommend, and one of the big boys but not British Gas as heard they were expensive.
We emailed Northern Gas and they rang back to make an arrangement for someone to come out and give us a quote on the spot.
By this time we had a quote from the two locals. The price was okay but it would take 10 days to do. With a baby in the house, a dog and nosy cats could I survive that let alone having every room in up roar.
Northern Gas arrived. Nice man. We had read up all about Northern Gas so when he started going on about the firm I plucked up the courage to say could we skip this part of it. Luckily he was not offended in fact pleased as it saved him one hours talk!
He went round the house helpfully saying what we had already thought and then sat and worked out the price. It was about £150 cheaper than locals so this wasnt the deciding vote. What was, was that they would do it in one day and probably half the next. A difference from 10 days. So there and then we decided to go with them especially as if anything cropped up and they had to do a correction or something else they spotted the price we pay would not change.
We arranged for the surveyor to come in a couple of days and the work to start 2 days after that.
Everything went okay with the surveyor saying where we wanted the boiler and the radiators were okay and work could go ahead.
Next day we had a phone call from Northern Gas saying could they start two days later as the boiler had not come from the manufacturers. Okayy.
The day of the fitting came and three men turned up ready for action. They were only 5 minutes late but hey that was a 2 hour drive.
Boiler in the kitchen unobtrusive in the corner? No. regulations say we cant have it there or on the outside wall as too close to the neighbours. They ring their boss who then rings me and says that it will have to go up in the airing cupboard. Okay says me then he hits me with it will be an extra £500 but we will give you a discount!
Then it was time for him to get a shock as I quoted what the rep said "no extra expense". He got a firm No I am not paying anything extra. (I am now quite chuffed with myself for that as 18 months ago I would have been a little mouse and said okay). So he said he would ring me back.
Ten minutes later he rang back and said that Northern Gas would foot the bill themselves.
The men spent all day working hard and fast and came back to finish it the next day.
They had to take up some floor board upstairs but not as many as I thought. They took away all the rubbish.
Would I recommend Norther Gas Central Heating ? The Sales Rep I would recommend. The workers I would recomment. The Surveyor should have known about where to put the boiler as that is what he came out to look at. I think that he is definately in the wrong job and he let Northern Gas down and because of him I could not give all the stars but the firm did it right in the end. and we are more than pleased with the central heating.
Advantages: Nice warm house cheaper gas bills Disadvantages: Substandard overpriced installation
THE BEGINNING
My old back boiler was well past its sell by date and costing a fortune plus the fire was out of the ark and ugly and the water tanks a nd cylinder were taking up loads of room in my attic and airing cupboard.
I decided that it was time that I put my hand in my pocket and forked out for a new heating system.
Where to get one from was my first dillema. Should I go for a cheap local fitter or should I go to a national company.
Rather ... ...phoned Homeserve shortly before Christmas.
Their representative arrived promptly and was very professional talking me through the options available to me and explaining the pros and cons of each type of system. NO HARD SELL..I decided on a combi boiler to be fitted in the space where the old tank was in the airing cupboard and also to have 3 new radiators installed.
First big surprise was that the work could be done at the beginning of January ...

Advantages: good price, salesman not pushy, installation very good, after sales service good Disadvantages: a little pushy when trying to 'close the deal'
Sales
After getting a quote from British Gas for a new boiler, and being generally unimpressed with the pushy salesman and price (~£4000), we tried Nothern Gas Heating, who quoted ~£2500.
The salesman was polite and not pushy. When we said we only wanted a quote to see how much we would need to save, he asked when they could contact us again, we said next summer, and we heard nothing from them until then. When they did phone, they were obviously ... ...of 12 months interest free, after which we could pay off the balance in full, or pay back the money over a set period (with interest). We took them up on that, though we had to pay a deposit.
Installation They sent round an engineer before the installation date, to plan the installation, after which a few hundred pounds was added to the quote, but we argued that one thing they were offering wasn't necessary and that we wouldn't pay any more than ...

...things, one of them was central heating. Coming from a much warmer climate central heating consisted of a shot of tequila or Sambuca. We bought our house a year ago and didn't think to check the boiler and radiators as we didn't know any better. (This was before the home information packs were a legal requirement) We now face the second winter in our new home and Lo and behold the central heating decided it had had enough. We weren't too worried ... ...with our new boiler and central heating and would highly reccomend Northern Gas. (Items installed were a new Y plan completely pumped system, 5 radiators, new pipes throughout, Potterton boiler, thermostat on the cylinder and a room thermostat. Each radiator has it's own thermostat as well, and a heated towel rail, we kept our water cylinder as this was still in a good condition) ...

Advantages: Good heating system, Good salesman, Mixer shower now power shower Disadvantages: Lack of communication and also very poor communication, installers didn't care, without heating and hot water and damage to property
...a new boiler for our central heating system as our old back boiler was 20 years old and was on its last legs (if it was an animal it would have been put to sleep years ago). So he came and did a good job of advising us what type of boiler we should get and we settles on the Ideal Isar model. So we decided to go ahead and have it done. Advantages: Cheap Disadvantages: Have to choose the installer carefully
I’ve been a heating engineer for 23 years now. Know all the tricks of the trade, all the scams, where people are ripped off etc. This little bit of information will, hopefully, help you get a decent system at a decent price. First of all, avoid British Gas. I was employed by them for 21 years, and made a good living out of them. They could afford it! British Gas systems and boiler exchanges are hideously expensive. Yet they are usually no better ... ...they ARE the local firm down the road, having been contracted out. Interesting when the locals, in one example, offered exactly the same system for 40% less, if bought direct! Once upon a time British Gas could justify its prices because it had massive overheads, as a state owned lumbering giant, with all the land and buildings it had to maintain. But these have all disappeared, so all the profit now goes to the shareholders and the chairman and ...

There are so many negative reviews on plumbers I thought I would add a positive one for a change.
I have just had electric centralheatinginstalled by a firm called Clwyd Heating and I have to say I would recommend this company to anyone living in the North Wales/ Chester/Warrington areas.
This company was established in 1988 and was also register with Corgi in the same year. They have since registered with OFTEC and are members of the Association of Plumbing and Heating Engineers and Construction Line. The company has built up a very good reputation in the North Wales area over the past 20 years and is run from a warehouse with separate offices in Rhyl. They carry out a wide range of plumbing and heating related works including new builds, renovation of listed building, commercial installations and repairs, domestic plumbing ...

Advantages: No unsightly tanks and more efficient than storage heaters. Disadvantages: None so far.
As I have lived in rural Wales for the past three years without access to mains gas I have had to use storage heaters to heat my home. On first moving here I looked into having oil or LPG centralheatinginstalled but both involved having tanks outside the property. Now this doesn?t sound too bad but with all the new buildings regulations and health and safety issues I was told the tank would have to be in the middle of my back garden. As the garden was one of the features that attracted us to buying the house in the first place we were not too thrilled at the prospect of having an oil tank as a prominent garden feature, so we persevered with the storage heaters.
Now the storage heaters are great they provide more than enough heat for the house and I have never been cold but they unfortunately, do not allow the convenience ...
We had a new centralheating system installed about 7 years ago. The installer fitted a Baxi Barcelona condensing boiler. Despite having it regularly serviced, every year something has gone wrong with it. We have spent hundreds of pounds on it. At the moment it is failing to auto-ignite in the mornings. So far, it has ignited after many manual attempts but I am dreading the day when it fails completely. Our tame gas appliance engineer is baffled, even after ringing Baxi many times.
We are considering having it ripped out and replaced with a different make, even though this would cost a lot.
I tried ringing Baxi myself and found them completely unhelpful.
I would not recommend this product under any circumstances. ...
