On 9th October 2009 a Salesman came from Northern Gas and quoted us a price for a new boiler, and as we had been without heat and water for two weeks waiting for quotes, and as we are both in our seventies, he said he would try to arrange installation the following week. On 12th October their Surveyor came to assess the work involved and said installation could not start until three weeks. He said the boiler quoted could not be installed as quoted for and the flue would have to go up through the roof, adding another approx. three hundred pounds to the quote. The salesman had quoted one thousand seven hundred and eighty-five pounds and took a deposit of three hundred and fifty-seven pounds. In view of the extra cost of the flue going through the roof we decided to cancel the order. We sent an email to them and also letter in the post on 12th October. After numerous telephone calls to Northern Gas we are stil trying to get our deposit back. As we are pensioners we need this money back to meet our bills at the end of the month, but they are telling us the deposit cannot be paid back until the end of the month. They soon take your money, but are extremely slow in paying anything back. They seem to have a very strange way of sending out their surveyor to assess the job after the salesman has already given a quote - talk about "putting the cart before the horse!!" We would not recommend this company, and do not really see why we should have been asked to pay a deposit before the work commences. We gave the job to a local plumber who did an extremely good and quick job with his apprentice on the 15th October, three days after we cancelled with Northern Gas and the cost was almost six hundred pounds less. So we would warn anyone not to pay a deposit in advance.
