What is Cerazette:
Cezarette is a hormonal contraceptive called a "POP" (progestrogen only pill) also commonly known as "the mini pill".

How it works:
Cerazette contains ingredients which stop the ovaries from releasing an egg but also works by thickening the mucus at the neck of the womb, this stops sperm being able to enter the womb this means that if by chance any eggs are released from the ovaries then it's hard for sperm to get through to the womb to fertilize them.

How it should be taken:
If you have previously taken the combined pill (COC) then take note. When taking the mini pill you do NOT have a gap week between packets but take 1 pill everyday with no breaks.

What if I miss a pill?
Unlinke a lot of other mini-pills Cerazette offers you 12 hours to take your pill if you forget to take it on time. So, if for example I always take my pill at 8 oclock in the morning but forget, I am still protected as long as I take my pill by 8 oclock in the evening. This 12 hour window is something that is uncommon to a lot of other mini-pills which often offer 3 hours. If however you do not manage to take your missed pill within 12 hours of your usual time then you are no longer protected, you should use another form of contraception for the next 7 days but continue to take your pills normally. After 7 days of taking your pills normally then you will be protected again.

What are the risks?
One risk that I must admit really does frighten me is that women taking progestrogen only pills have a greater risk of having an ectopic pregnancy if they get pregnant while taking it. An ectopic pregnancy is a pregnancy occuring outside the womb. Any person on this type of pill who experiences any worrying abdominal pain should see a doctor. Another thing is that there seems to be a small percentage increase in the amount of women taking any kind of oral contraceptive developing breast cancer. If you are sick less than 3-4 hours after taking your pill then it may be ineffective, take another pill as soon as possible, if you do not take another pill within 12 hours then you may not be covered and will need to use an alternate form of contraception for the next 7 days, but carry on taking your pill regularly.

Who can't use this pill?
The following should NOT use this pill:
Anyone with a history of thrombosis, anyone who is experiencing unusual vaginal bleeding without a known reason. If you are pregnant or if you suspect you may be pregnant. If you have a history of serious liver disease which has not returned to normal. If you have "progestrogen dependent cancer". Naturally do not use if you are allergic to the ingredients of Cerazette. To see if this pill is suitable for you see your doctor.

I'm breast feeding can I use Cerazette?
You can use Cerazette if you are breast feeding, however it is important to note that some (a very small amount) of the medicine may be passed on to your child via breast milk, as of yet there ceases to be any evidence that this is harmful in any way.

So what are the side effects?
Like a lot of other pills. Cerazette comes with instructions which unfold into a massive piece of paper and a list of many side effects. While using Cerazette you may experience nausea, headaches, mood swings, you may have a decrease in libido, you may gain weight (which I must admit happened to me on this pill), you may also experience pain in your breasts, interestingly something I discovered myself about the contraceptive pill only when I visited the optition is that it can give you very dry eyes and also cause problems if you wear contact lenses (which I do), I must admit this is not something I have found with this pill, rather Cilest, my previous pill. For a full list of side effects speak to your doctor or have a look at the information sheet provided with cerazette.

What happens if I overdose?
There have been no reports of serious side effects from overdosing on Cerazette, some things that may occur are slight vaginal bleeding and nausea. However if you do overdose and are worried, visit your doctor.

What if I'm taking other medicines?
Your doctor will inform you if you are taking any medicines that are incompatible with this particular pill. If you are worried about any other medicine you are taking, speak to your doctor before taking the other medicine. If you are going to have surgery or know you will be immobile for a long period of time then this is something that you need to speak about with your doctor.

Packing:
Something I really like about Cerazette is the packing. When I go to the pharmacy, I normally pick up 3 months worth. Each month comes in a tiny packet, it looks neat and without close inspection it's impossible to tell what it is. The tablets come in a white pack, with days written in black on the white background so it's not hard to read and it's easy to see that you've taken your pill for that day. Tablets come in packs of 28.

Myself:
My experience of the contraceptive pill started when I was 16, I was put onto Cilest which is a compined pill (COC), Cilest was known as a "safe pill" but I have read several reviews of teenagers on Cilest developing conditions such as DVT. Having been on the combined pill (cilest) for abour a year I suddenly developed high blood pressure, I wa kept on the pill with regular check ups for between 6 months and 1 year and my blood pressure slowly got higher until it was at a very high level. Eventually I have been moved onto Cerazette, although my blood pressure still isn't right again it's not getting any worse, I am thankful that the doctor was able to prescribe me Cerazette because I had previously been told that if I was to be taken off the contraceptive pill then and put on tablets for high blood pressure I would never be able to take the combined pill again. Although this is true still that I will never be allowed to take the combined pill again, my doctor has informed me that Cerazette which is a Progestrogen only pill (POP) is a highly effective form of the mini-pill as long as it is taken correctly, which I do not have a problem with. For me, despite the irregular bleeding for lengths of time, this pill is a god send, as I know that there aren't other forms of contraceptives that are as reliable as the pill is.

Good review, sounds like you have found the right pill for you too! Tam -x-

I have been on this for a while now - because it is better for migraine sufferes and has less risk of developping breast cancer than when taking the combined pill. In the beginning, I had irregular bleeding which drove me mad - then I lost me period altogether for weeks and weeks, which had me worried! But I will stick with it, because my migraines are so much better now. x
