The Certance CDL864 Autoloader provides reliable automated data protection for small-to-medium sized businesses that require affordable unattended data protection. An extension of its DAT 72 format tape family, Certance is the first to bring a DAT 72 Autoloader configuration to the market. Certance CDL864 Autoloaders offers 12 times the capacity capability of a single DAT 72 drive at a fraction of the cost per Gbyte while delivering up to 25.2 Gbyte/hour transfer rate. This is an 80% improvement in capacity per cartridge and a 16% increase in transfer rate over any other DDS autoloader. And it supports backward compatibility with DDS-3 and DDS-4 media, providing complete investment security. The Certance CDL864 Autoloader provides exceptional reliability with unprecedented features such as TapeShield, which reduces airborne and media contaminants, improving data integrity and enhancing the life of the drive and media and SmartShield, which ensures that data is recoverable from difficult-to-read media.
Advantages: VERY FAST Disadvantages: EXPENSE AND NOISE
...aspects such as capacity. The 36GB drive is not what you would call big, but the speed somewhat makes up a little for that.
With the main pro being speed the specs speak for themselves:
Buffer Size 8 MB
Average Latency 2.99 ms (nominal)
Contact Start/Stop Cycles 20,000 minimum
Seek Times (Average)
Read Seek Time (Average) 4.5 ms
Write Seek Time (Average) 5.9 ms (average)
Track-To-Track Seek Time 0.6 ms (average)
Full Stroke Seek 10.2 ms (average)
Transfer Rates
Buffer To Host (Serial ATA) 150 MB/s (Max)
Buffer To Disk 72 MB/s (Sustained
If you have money to waste then think about buying the Raptors, otherwise with newer and the faster SATA 2 out now the coice is yours....

Advantages: Up and running in under a minute Disadvantages: Not the fastest, (but then what do you expect)
...a simple to use backup solution, but it also features HPs unique "One Button Disaster Recovery" or OBDR. As the name suggests, if you loose you system (disk crash etc) you can recover the whole thing from tape by pressing just one button. How does it work? You simply load the back up tape in to the drive, power off the system, press the eject button on the tape drive and power everything up, this put's the tape drive into it's OBDR mode and the system sees it as a bootable device and boots from the tape, this then triggers the full system recovery... and guess what? It works! much quicker and easier than rebuilding from scratch.
Summary:
#36GB Native 72GB Compressed
#Transfer rate of 23GB/hour
#USB2
#Up and running in 60 seconds
#Features OBDR (One Button Disaster Recovery)
This drive gives you everything you need to make reliable...

Advantages: fast, spacious and very quiet Disadvantages: none really...
...I purchased this drive last September from Dabs for £72.47 including P&P and it was delivered very quickly (I have always had good service from Dabs). The drive seems well designed, the metal silver casing seems strong and durable and looks OK too. As already mentioned in other reviews the only possible downside I can see is the bulky plug but the drive is not intended to be used as a mobile storage device so the plug doesn't present a problem when the drive is placed on your desk. The drive size LED on the front is a little pointless, why do you need reminding the drive is 500gb in size - surely it would have been better to just use a normal LED light to show activity or actually show how much space was remaining on the drive.
I installed the drive in seconds, you just need to plug the power cable and the USB cable in and away you go...
