Must be the Safest Chain Saw you can buy
Review of Black&Decker GK 1000 Alligator by
holdfast
Advantages: Safe, Low Maintenance
Disadvantages: No good for Lumber Jacks
This is quite a unique piece of kit. Ideal for the gardener who has small trees or bushes in the garden and likes to prune off branches.
In other words its for a gardener who does not see need to buy a petrol driven chain saw and have all the maintance problems that come with it. Such as mixing oil and petrol to the correct mixture. And when you have finished useing petrol driven chain saws they need draining off, otherwise they can be a hazard, ... ...shed or garage. So being electric its a lot safer.
I decided to obtain the Alligator as I had a number of overgrown and quiet wild Triffid like bushes that I needed to get rid of. I just wish I had known how quick and efficient it was, as I have become very popular with other members of my extended family, now they all want to borrow it.
How does it work, well as you can see from the image above its like a big 2 handed pair of scissors. To start, ...

The Telford Chainsaw Massacre
Review of Black&Decker GK 1640 T by
20-20vision
Advantages: cuts like a hot knife through butter, safe and easy operation, chain automatically oiled, quiet, light
Disadvantages: price
Living out in the sticks has many advantages, but when the trees that run alongside my house decided to have a growth spurt over the summer down mainly to the rain I came to the conclusion that a severe storm would infact leave me at risk of waking in the night to find a branch imbedded into my forehead. After overturning the preservation orders on the trees with the local council and enquiring as to the astronomical prices being charged by tree ... ...at trimming the branches back so far that the trees would think they were regressing back to acorns. Both fancying the prospect of using a saw 15 foot up a ladder and due to the size of the branches a chainsaw was the only option available and something of a boyhood fantasy come true and so the quest through a veritable minefield of chainsaws began in earnest. Taking a look around my local DIY stores it became blindly obvious that I was an amateur ...

warning
Review of Stihl MS 170 by
inholms
Advantages: nice when it works
Disadvantages: Bad product instructions
...February I purchased a new Stihl 170 chain saw, for occasional garden use. I used it a few times in March and it worked well, but since then it has been in the shed. Yesterday I used it, I started it up and a little smoke came out the side, I then put it in gear and it stopped and would not start. I took it to my Stihl agent and he said it was damaged beyond repair as I had not disengaged the brake, it can not be fixed. OK fair enough, my fault. ... ...using a computer program, if you don't use it all the time you easily forget how to use it, it's human nature. Therefore, I would have thought that with an action so important, that could ruin an expensive machine, the very least they could do would be to put a big warning notice on the machine. Something like "When starting this saw, ensure the brake is disengaged" Had you done that, I would not now be facing having to spend £200 on a new saw! ...

jonsered 2165 16 in bar and chain
Review of Jonsered CS2165 by
jwarren1978
Advantages: power
Disadvantages: on off switch placement
jonsered 2165 turbo is a very good chainsaw. I use a 16 inch bar and chain to get the most out of my power to cut my firewood. My father has owned a jonsered my entire life. We burned about 15 cord of firewood a year to heat our house. I am 30. His last jonsered lasted 25 years. My fathet has also ran a 24 inch bar and chain to fell bigger timber. It works for this saws but of course takes alot of power. The saw starts in 2-3 pulls cold and 1 pull ...

Dire customer service
Review of Stihl MS 260 by
skier-hughes
Advantages: none
Disadvantages: no customer service at all if things go wrong
I'd never buy another Stihl anything again after the way I've been treated. Very Briefly. Bought a chainsaw in 2005. Used it sparingly for domestic use cutting a few branches for my log fires. It broke. Wouldn't oil the chain. Was told by service agents that a bearing had broken and this had hit the casing, cracking it, causing oil to flow out and not into lubricating the chain. Cost as much to replace casing as buy new one. I phoned Stihl, they ... ...bearing and clutch parts. Stihl eventually picked up saw for checking. 3 months later and they still haven't told me what's wrong with it. I even had an email 11 days ago saying that it had come back from the workshop and I'd have another email in the next day or two......... I've sent emails requiesting an update they just get ignored. I've been without my saw for over 6 months now. I emailed the MD, he deleted my mail without even opening it. Stihl ...
