I have always been a fan of football management games and the first one I experienced was Championship Manager 2 back when I used to play against my best mate but following on from years of step ups there was a sudden drop in the quality of Championship Manager that led to many people (including me) switching to Football Manager but thankfully this game sees the series back on top where it deserves to sit. The game sees you take charge of your favourite team (I recommend you don't start with them on your first try as seeing your team do badly is never nice) and develop your club through a multitude of managerial decisions including transfers, tactics, training, etc. This may sound simple but remember that transfers need money and this means sales, tactics need trained and this leads to the need for you to decide on your coaching staff and improving them. One of the great new additions in the game is a percentage of knowledge for each region in relation to the players in the region and this is only improved through scouting which takes funds. All sounds easy? The game is not a simple game to master but one that you will need to work hard at to get your team where you want but along the way you get to sit back and watch your team in 3D matches and see where you are going right and where you are going wrong and above all you get to enjoy the game itself.
The good points:
- Simple navigation - Excellent 3D match engine - Excellent transfer system including scouting networks - Brilliant training availability - Great depth of staff available to improve the club with - An enjoyable gameplay - Great team talks - Media and mail systems are easy to understand and navigate - Reserves and also youth teams to help you decide on your best 11 and develop new talent
Negatives:
- The game does take quite a high spec machine and can be slow loading. - Not as tactically challenging as Football Manager which is a personal preference and for me Championship Manager comes out on top everytime.
So what do I make of the game? This is a return to form for Championship Manager and is a truly enjoyable game with an excellent control system, improved match engine, good depth of transfer market for players and staff and most importantly a generally high quality and great depth of game all round.
