Well I have smoked since I was 12 years old, now 29. I did actually stop for 2 years on the Zyban brand, but on a night out drinking I stupidly had a cigarette, that set me off to starting smoking again. So eventually I decided to stop again.
So off I went to the doctors and they told be about a new brand had come out that worked just like Zyban, just cheaper for them to make, but was told it worked exactly the same. So I thought well ... ...
So I picked up my prescription, these are only available on prescription you cannot buy them over the counter. I started on these tablets the next day.
The instructions were very easy, you take one tablet of 0.5mg for the first 3 days, and they do say to try to keep to the same time each day you take them. Then on day 4 you take one in the morning and one at night, both tablets are 0.5mg again.

So off I went to the doctors and they told be about a new brand had come out that worked just like Zyban, just cheaper for them to make, but was told it worked exactly the same. So I thought well why not try them, the new brand was called Chimpax.
On week two the dose gets increased to 1mg tablets, and again you take one on a morning and one on a night. After you have finished on week two you can get another prescription for a further 2 weeks at the same dose as your second week.
The packet is very good as it tells you what days you are on and the dosages are all in the correct place, so you know when they need to be increased. The tablets are easy to swallow unlike some tablets, as they are film coated.
Now on for what I thought of the tablets and if they helped me to stop. Well on my first week I was fine with taking the tablets, I also continued to smoke, which you do on your first week, you set a date to stop on the second week. So the first week was great, then came time for the second week, this is where I went downhill.
Each time I took a tablet, morning and night, I would feel really ill and sick for hours. I am not good with not feeling too well loll. But still I continued, I got to the third day of my second week when I did finally give up on the tablets, I could not work I felt that ill, I was still smoking, but I did feel less of a need for a cigarette, but it made me feel a bit better when smoking, as daft as that sounds.
So with me feeling so bad and losing money at work, I did stop taking the tablets before I actually stopped smoking. Maybe if I did keep at it then I would have stopped, but I could not face the feeling the tablets gave me every time I took them and for hours at a time.
So would I recommend these tablets, well I do suppose that depends on the person really, and how well they handle feeling sick, but I would certainly recommend trying Zyban as there were no side effects on them for me and I did stop smoking. So no I would really not recommend Champix for the side effects reason, but as to if they do help you stop, I would not know, as I could not go that far with them.
Advantages: It worked for me Disadvantages: None that I can think of
I had been a smoker for well over 20 years - I knew the damage it could do but I actually enjoyed the smoking sensation. I'd tried to give up on several occasions before, although somewhat half-heartedly it has to be said.
As a result of an accident at home (sounds ominous doesn't it? - I cut my hand on a rusty nail - not very exciting I know!) and went to my GPs for a tetanus. While I was there, the nurse mentioned a brand new drug that literally ... ...GP was keen to see if the claims made by the manufacturer were anywhere near true - I also later found out that the local Health Trust hadn't at that point authorised payment for this drug from their budget and that it hadn't yet been authorised for prescription in the UK but that's another story.
So, I was introduced to Champix (generic name is varenicline). It works differently from other smoking cessation products. There is a two fold effect ...

Advantages: Fools your brain into thinking it's had a cigarette. Makes cigarettes taste foul. Disadvantages: A few side effects but nothing that can't be dealt with
I stared taking Champix in June 2007 having smoked 20 a day for around 20 years. I'd heard they were coming onto the market and was desperate to give but knew that there was no chance of doing cold turkey, so I waited for the pills to become available on the NHS. The procedure works as follows: you go to your GP surgery where usually they have a nurse who is qualified to dispense prescriptions for Champix. After a few preliminary questions to determine ... ...two weeks' worth of Champix (£6.95) and told that if I hadn't given up within 14 days, I would not be prescribed any more Champix.
I ended up giving up on day 8 and continued to visit the nurse every two weeks to collect my prescription. At first, she checked my carbon monoxide levels to make sure I wasn't still smoking but after a month or so dispensed with this. Funnily enough, as the end of the three month Champix course was drawing to an end, ...

Advantages: Really helps with cravings, lessons the enjoyment of smoking Disadvantages: Side Effects
Having smoked for about 15 years I decided to try quitting. I had tried before using patches but these didnt work. So I decided to do it properly this time and go to the doctors. I asked about Champix and was very suprised they prescribed it. At this moment not many surgeries are prescribing it as the Health Trust still think its too expensive to prescribe on the NHS.
Still, I was allowed some and started the course. There are known side effects ... ...have any. But I did. After taking the tablet (even the lower dose you take at the beginning) I felt very nauseous. It got worse when the dosage increased, but this didnt put me off as I felt this was a small price to pay if it worked. Within a few days of taking the tablet I found I was smoking less and when I did smoke I wasnt enjoying it. This is exactly what the claims are, and by day 10 (my quit day) I found that I was more than ready.
I have ...

Quick review of Pfizer Champix
I gave up smoking with Champix after 25 years of smoking 20 + cigarettes a day. If there is a magic pill to stop you smoking this is it. You really are not bothered about not having a cigarette, and if you cheat and try one there is no enjoyment from it. After 12 weeks on Champix I had completed the course and came off them. I would say that if there is going to be a time when you might regress its when you stop taking the pills. I found I suddenly craved cigs again but overcame this by gradually withdrawing from the tablets instead of stopping suddenly. Ask your GP or Practice or Practice Nurse for advice when withdrawing from Champix ...

Advantages: It works Disadvantages: Nausea, nightmares
I have been a diehard smoker fo nearly 20 years - at least 20 a day. 2 weeks ago I went to my docs in desperation and got the Champix. I'd read up on them (including the horror stories) but decide that it might be better than lung cancer.
Anyway, 2 weeks into it and I stopped smoking 4 days ago no problem. For the first 3 days of the treatment, nothing, then suddenly I started getting no pleasure from fags - thought at 1st I'd bought a duff pack ... ...this quickly became total nausea and I could only take a puff or two before outing the fags. So I stopped smoking on day 10 (I could have stopped before then as fags were making me feel so ill but I had 'Day 10' in my mind to stop and stuck with it) because I felt like I'd puke if I smoked! No willpower involed at that point, which surprised me. I still feel a bit nauseous a lot of the time but nothing major - better than the constant coughing and ...

Advantages: Stops you smoking without replacing the nicotine with nicotine Disadvantages: A few side effects to be aware of.
This is the second attempt I have made to stop smoking using Champix. The first time I never finished the 3 month course as I thought I had conquered the nicotine demons. Unfortunately after 4 months of being stopped I found myself back on the fags so this is the first tip I can strongly give you. FINISH THE COURSE- even if you think you have beaten the craven for a puff- you probably have not. This is the whole reason the course is conducted over a 3 month period.
The side effects I had were pretty much what is said in the leaflet for the 1 in 100 - drowsiness and slight nausea. But if I had read the leaflet further I would have discovered i was more unique than first thought- I could not stop passing wind( my girlfriend says the smell of cigarettes was better but i think she's pulling my leg). I have also had indegestion which i ...
Advantages: easy to take, very few side effects and it works as a great aid to will power Disadvantages: can make you drowsy
Champix works wonders for those of us who are determined to quit but dread the nasty cravings that cause our will power to disintegrate. I went to my local stop smoking nurse and was prescribed champix, i had tried everything including hypnotism beforehand. the first week i was pleased to learn you can continue to smoke as usual, but surprisingly i didn't want to smoke so much and i had no real cravings! after that first week i set a date that i would become a non smoker and that is when i officially gave up. if successful, after a time you reduce the medication and that is where you may have to exercise a little will power, it worked beautifully for my mother, a heavy smoker for over 30 years. My mum had a heart attack and was naturally worried about her smoking and so managed with relative ease to give up using champix, i unfortunately ...
