I’ve never been much of a Chanel fan – I think their range of perfumes is very unique to the point where you can tell a Chanel scent straight away – whichever fragrance it is. However, when I was bought a bottle of Allure a while back I discovered how there is probably something in the Chanel range for everybody and having done some research on it for this op – discovered why this one was probably the most suited to me.
The perfume itself was created by Jacques Polge who is a creator of perfumes and alleges to have dedicated himself in the search for a ‘scent which responds to the needs and desires of women today, and helps them to achieve their own individuality’. He believes that perfume is an extension of the art of the couturier, revealing the innermost dimension of femininity and that it is the poetry of fashion.
Marketed as: Difficult to define. Impossible to resist. I have heard many descriptions of this perfume including clean, sheer, sexy and warm. It’s often categorised as a floral / fresh / oriental scent – but is it in keeping with the Chanel standard?
Jacques Polge has used his skills to maintain a balance which allows everyone to find their own individuality. Created in 1996, this fragrance ushers in the 21st century and establishes the importance of the individual. Allure is a perfume which has apparently done away with the traditional top, middle and base notes commonly found in perfumes, instead claiming to be multi-faceted – all of which compliment the others.
These 6 facets are:
Calabrian Citron – to add freshness Sicilian Mandarin – to add a fruity note May Rose & Oriental Jasmine – to add the timeless floral element Magnolia, Honeysuckle & Water lily – these add the ‘imaginary’ floral facet (suggests undertones perhaps?) Haitian Vetiver – too add the woody element Vanilla – finishing off with the delicateness and sensuality of this facet
This to enable the elements/notes or ‘facets’ (delete as preferred!) to be interpreted differently by the wearer – in other words, the same perfume will always smell slightly different on each wearer, and this completely allows for that, allowing the perfume to become unique to its wearer.
So, a perfume which isn’t in keeping with the other more ‘traditional’ perfumes from Chanel which also creates its own mood according to the wearer? Sounds too good to be true – surely…
Well, I can only comment on my own experience with this perfume and seeing as it is said to be unique to everyone who wears it, this may well be a different experience for everyone, however, I would suggest that this fragrance is worth testing out to see how it smells on you before buying it (especially as it is rather expensive!)
There are many forms in which you can buy this fragrance – a whole variety of parfums, lotions and creams in fact. Boots seems to be the best at stocking the majority of these and therefore, the prices given below are in accordance with those charged at Boots stores:
Cooling Body Tonic: A low-alcohol translucent gel which tones and invigorates. It has a fluid, non oily texture and is easily absorbed to leave the skin feeling soft and delicately fragranced. Contains iridescent micro particles to bring a subtle golden sheen to the skin. 200ml - £22
Body Cream: A rich, non-greasy cream which nourishes and softens skin, leaving it intensely fragranced. 200ml - £44
Shimmering Body Scrub: A light, fluid gel which exfoliates and softens skin gently to reveal its natural radiance and leave it fragranced. Recommend to use in conjunction with the Bath Gel. 200ml - £22.50
Shimmering Body Lotion: An this non-oily lotion moisturises, smoothes and softens skin which shimmers with a subtle iridescence. 100ml – £22
Body Lotion: A fluid, silky, moisturising lotion with a delicate fragrance and rapidly absorbed. 200ml - £29
Spray Deodorant: A deodorant that provides instant freshness and lasting well-being. 100ml - £19
Bath Gel: A rich foaming gel that cleanses skin gently and protects its natural moisture level, leaving it lightly fragranced. 200ml – £26
Bath Soap: A formula based on natural oils, this leaves skin supple and intensely fragranced. Its creamy texture won’t dry skin. 150g - £14
Right, now that’s that little lot out of the way (see what I mean about it being quite expensive!). I actually only own a 100ml bottle of Eau de toilette – vaporisateur spray, which still means that it was dig deep time for the person who bought it for me. Both the box and the bottle are very simple although this varies largely throughout the range (I’ve attached some pics at the bottom of this review to give a better idea although I could only fit 7 on!)
The box for my Eau de Toilette spray is a rectangular pale pink box with gold edging, its very simple but in a typically classical way. The bottle is pretty much in the same style, being rectangular in shape with only the word ALLURE written across the top in the same pale pink shade as the box. The only other clue on the bottle is the lid – this is a simple pull off version which reveals a fine mist spray underneath. However, the lid itself is silver with a gold band around the middle simply with CHANEL engraved into it. Very classic and understated by also very well designed.
The perfume bottle is clear which reveals the yellow coloured liquid inside. On first spray this has a very strong alcohol smell which needs at least a minute to settle and develop. I would also therefore recommend that when trying/testing this fragrance you give it time to settle before making your decision as this initial overpowering scent can be a bit off putting.
Straight away its possible to tell that this fragrance is one of the Chanel range. It has that typical underlying scent which all the Chanel range have – the strong floral scent which is very hard to describe but easy to recognise
However, once this has settled properly it becomes something altogether more subtle, very feminine and very much less typical. On me, the citron facet really comes through reminding me slightly of CK One but in a much more sophisticated way. It settles down to still be mainly citron but with floral undertones – although they’re much different and a lot softer than the initial ones.
Still, like I said, everyone is different and this perfume is designed to smell different one everyone – I tested this theory out on my friend and although it smelt similar – it definitely wasn’t the same.
One point about it though is that as with all (in my opinion) Chanel perfumes it takes a woman to wear it – what I’m trying to say is that it’s not really suitable for the teenage end of the market – the price will obviously be a massive indicator of this anyway, but it’s a much more adult fragrance than some.
Having squirted it about the office for a bit of testing I was asked by three men what it was – when asked why, they replied that they liked it and when told the name was Allure – there was more than one comment that it was rather alluring (or at least comments of that nature!)
Because of its subtleness and femininity I wear it for both the day (at the office – not about town) and the evening. It's staying power is very good - it lasts throughout 9 hours at the office and it's only through personal choice if I top it up for the evening - it's not because it's worn off and I have to, although it obviously softens more as the day wears on.
So, there you have it – the concept works, I’ve found a Chanel perfume that works for me and can be adapted to suit anybody, men find it alluring…. What more does a woman need?
NB: I have only given a 4 star rating becuase it's so expensive - everything else about it is great - just the price....
Advantages: It smells wonderful Disadvantages: The price tag!
...at least one bottle of Chanel perfume and just perhaps it should be Allure. Back in the 1920's Coco Chanel launched perhaps the first designer perfume - the famous No5 over the intervening years further perfumes were added to the Chanel range. Each individual in their own right but each similar in the fact they were marketed for the sophisticated woman and having that distinct Chanel smell. Coming from such a design house then Allure did have a lot ... ...Created by Jacques Pogle for Chanel with the remit to create a perfume that was sophisticated and seductive, for the woman of the 90's. Pogle had also created Coco Chanel and Egotise for Chanel back in the 1980's.
Chanel perfumes have a certain something, they screams sophisticated, confident and seductive. It's worn by woman who know what they want in life and aren't afraid to go get it. Allure follows in this line very well. It simply oozes class. ...

Advantages: A different approach Disadvantages: Too heavy
...i would not normally wear Chanel perfumes as i found them to be too heavy and in truth reminded me of older ladies! This perfume is quite unique and there was a lot of hype when it first came out not only because it was a new Chanel fragrance but it was suposed to a whole new style of perfume. HISTORY
-----------
I will just do the history of the perfume as if i include the whole Chanel dynasty, Well thats a review in it's self! This perfume was ... ...for this perfume came from Chanel herself and he created a fragrance that would give everyone the chance to have their own allure.
He decided to throw out the usual methods of composing fragrance and use something completly different. Instead of using Top, middle & bottom notes he used multi faceted approach, 6 different ones and none of them stronger than the other and they are to overlap and compliment each other, so there was not a dominant scent ...

...feel good factor as well. Chanel Allure rapidly made it onto my dressing table after I smelt it on a work mate. Now my ex work mate was a very sophisticated no nonsense Danish nurse who had a certain air about her, she turned heads as she strood around the department, wafting the most beautiful smell but was so totally oblivious to the effect she was having on our mainly aged male patients! I had to have a bottle of this stuff not to turn the heads ... ...When you think Chanel you probably think of their more famous perfume No 5, being a total perfume junkie I'll admit to having a bottle of this, it's not a firm favourite at all and for many years I did avoid Chanel perfumes due to the fact I thought No5 was slightly medicore and a little bit dated in all honesty! Chanel Allure on the other hand is definetly a more sophisticated 90's perfume. Allure was created by the Chanel nose - a posh word for ...

...had always stayed away from Chanel due to their most famous of perfumes No5. Which in my opinion is vile, I actually have to leave the room if I smell it on someone, it makes me feel sick. Advantages: Another great Chanel perfume. Disadvantages: None.
...in the classic cut glass Chanel bottle, with glass stopper. In the centre of which is a gold box conting the words ALLURE and CHANEL. Around on the neck of these bottles is a pink ribbon/thread, which is sealed with wax, I think? (Nice touch!!) The box packaging itself, is a pretty pale, salmon pink. This also has the gold box, containing the words ALLURE and CHANEL as on the parfum bottle. (Put simply, just another well packaged Chanel product!!)
... ...bit more pricey than other Chanel Perfumes.)
There is also Chanel, Allure Homme ( for men), which is also very pleasing.
As with all Big Name perfume, it is really easy to get hold of. All major department stores stock it, as well as Boots the chemist! (I found it for sale on scentrepoint.co.uk, and the prices were as follows;)

Advantages: Quality long lasting fragrance. Disadvantages: Expensive.
***ChanelAllure Sensuelle***
This is the first perfume that I have reviewed, but as I have bought this for the last few years, I thought it was worth reviewing.
***What's it like?***
I last bought this perfume using Boots Advantage Points (which is another review altogether!), which I had saved up over a period of around two years. It lasts me around 9 months and the fragrance is effective for all of this time, if I store it out of the light.
On other occasions, I have had vouchers for my birthday or Christmas and I have put it towards the perfume, as it is quite pricey.
It comes in a sleek maroon box and the shape of the bottle is neither fancy, nor ultra modern. It is in a rectangular shaped tinted glass bottle, with a maroon and gold lid. It is class packaging for a class product.
I first smelt this fragrance ...
Advantages: great lasting smell, Chanel quality Disadvantages: maybe no ground breaking enough
prices for them.
Parfum 7.5ml £65
EaudeParfum 30ml/ 50ml/ 100ml £38/ £52/ £73
Eaude Toilette 50ml/ 100ml £40/ £57
Deodorant 100ml £22
Shower Gel 200ml £25
Body Cream 200ml £45
Body Lotion 200ml £28
The body products feature the usual classy understated Chanel design. Even the boxes seem too good to throw out once you've started a new product. Quality fragrance items can have a great "comfort factor", their value goes beyond "just smelling good".
As for my personal experience with this perfume, I would still rather stick with the original Allure. At least on me it manages to be more elusive when it comes to defining it. (Admittedly, this may be in part because it took me years to track it down from when I first smellled it ...
Advantages: long lasting, value Disadvantages: more expensive that other perfumes (but worth it!)
Being eaudeparfum this frangrance lasts.... and I mean LASTS. I was once feeling lazy and didn't do my washing for a couple of days and when I did I could still smell the scent all over them.
However be warned this scent is not for the faint hearted, if you want something light and fresh smelling this scent is not for you, it's heavy but very feminine and with gorgeous oriental notes. It packs a punch. I remeber one night when I was out for drinks no less than three people commented on it, asking what it was and complimenting me on my choice.
A little goes a long way though, and it can be over-powering if you use too much. Yes it's more expensive than most fragrance but what you're getting is a stronger longer lasting fragrance and therefore good value for money. ...
