Chanel No 19 was launched in 1970 - 48 years after Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel planned the 1923 launch of the more famous Chanel No 5. It was created by Henri Robert, the second Chanel "nose" on 19th August 1970 and coincided with Coco's 86th birthday. Coco Chanel decide to launch No 19 as she felt that the women of the 1970's needed something different - more suited to an active and independent lifestyle. She wanted to create a feminine perfume but much bolder than Chanel No 5. Many believed that Chanel No 19 would be fail, as it would never match up to the huge success of Chanel No 5. However, nearly 25 years later it is still going strong and has become a timeless classic.
The perfume is sold in a very solid and square looking silver grey canister. It looks rather old fashioned and boring in today's perfume market of unusual shaped bottles and colours. The top of the canister is inlaid with a gold plate bearing the distinctive back-to-back Chanel C logo in white. There is also a large band of gold around the middle of the grey canister. Lift the large square lid and the bottle is hidden under a large gold collar with the spray nozzle at the top. If you lift the gold collar off, the perfume is in a clear glass bottle underneath. The scent is an unusual, yet pretty green colour, best described as pistachio in hue.
N°19 has a floral yet woody green aroma as it's made with mostly white and green flowers. Some of the flowers used are some of the rarest and therefore more expensive natural raw materials in the world. Iris is the most expensive due to its very low yield. It has top notes of French Neroli and Persian Galbanum. The middle notes are Italian Iris, May Rose and French Narcissus. Finally, the base notes are made up of North American Cedarwood, South American Gaiac wood and Haitian Vetiver.
Chanel No 19 is readily available in all good department stores plus some of the bigger chemists and supermarkets. The refills are harder to track down but I found all of them available to buy on the internet through www.escentual.co.uk as well as www.garden.co.uk
30ml Eau de Toilette = £29.00 50ml Eau de Toilette = £39.00 (refill = £36.00) 100ml Eau de Toilette = £55.00 (refill = £50.00)
It also comes with the usual expensive accompaniment products such as deodorant (£20.00), talcum powder (£16.00), body lotion (£28.00), soap (£13.00) and bath gel (£25.00). However, at these prices I would imagine they are for special occasions only…
You can douse yourself from head to toe in Chanel No 19 and it will never smell overpowering, unlike a lot of other perfumes. It has a crisp and light aroma. It's pleasantly floral but toned down by an underlying hint of moss. It is expensive, but a small amount does go a long way. The refill idea is a splendid concept as once you have paid for the initial silver grey canister, you can then buy cheaper refill bottles which slot inside it. Highly recommended if you are a fan of a lighter and more delicate scent. If I close my eyes and take a deep whiff I can almost imagine we're in the middle of a heatwave……
Advantages: love that whiff Disadvantages: expensive
...been spraying myself liberally with Chanel 19's distinctive fragrance for over twenty years now. Despite my flirting with other scents from time to time, Chanel no 19 is the perfume my friends and family identify as being "me". I've even been known to spray a whiff on my daughters' pillows before I go off on my frequent business trips, at their request.

Gabrielle insisted that the 70's woman needed a new signature scent, something that would suit her bold, dynamic lifestyle without losing her femininity. The scent itself was created by Henri Robert and No 19 has gone on to become a timeless classic in its own right. It is described as "a bold bouquet, a harmony of white and green flowers" and is classified as floral, woody and green.
The wonderful mixture of scents ...

Advantages: Quite simply this perfume makes me feel good. Disadvantages: none
Chanel No 19 is my usual perfume but now and again I fancy a change – but I have rarely found one I like quite as much.
However, I recently went to replenish my stock and re – discovered Fidji which I have also written an opinion on, which in turn reminded me of another favourite of long ago called Expression. I did a search on the internet for it but it seems to have been discontinued but while searching I found out quite a bit about ... ...In order to write about Chanel 19 itself I must first attempt to explain the language and effects of perfume and the various perfume families. Obviously, if you already know about this stuff just skip this bit.

Advantages: longlasting scent, sense of luxury Disadvantages: Not as unique as you expect
When you are wearing Chanel perfume, you feel like you are a million dollars. Yes, even if you are dressed head to toe in a Mark One tracksuit! I have tried Chanel 19 on and off over the years, mostly free samples from stores and other people’s bedrooms. It is a very strong, fruity perfume, which lasts all day and the bonus is that, the tone changes as the day goes on. As far as the packaging goes it is very simple and sleek in design and that ... ...sense it is timeless. Chanel is not the kind of perfume that you will make a favourite, but it is one that you will happily wear when you want to make that special change.

Quick review of Chanel No 19
Chanel Number Nineteen is simply the best. Like other reviewers, every now and again I am unfaithful and try a different perfume, but it never matches up. 19 can be used anytime, anywhere, like a magic veil and hypnotises with pleasure those around you. Yes it is expensive, but you are so wooooorth it! :0) Whenever I watch the seductive Nicole Kidman advertisement on tv, I think wonderful production, beautiful woman, but wrong perfume! It should have been No. 19! So any men out there reading this (unlikely I know), before you buy your amour a large bottle of 5, think again. ...
