Channel 4 - Ali G, Innit

Advantages: None at all
Disadvantages: Crude, offensive, not funny at all.

...Ali G Innit, is on Channel 4 on Fridays. I use the term comedian loosely as I just don’t find him funny at all. He speaks in a silly accent and makes up words that aren’t funny in any way and make him difficult to understand at times. Now I know someone is sure to say what about comedians like Stanley Unwin? ...was funny without being offensive. This brings me on to my next point about Ali G. He is rude to his guests to the point of humiliation. OK so it is their choice to go on the show knowing what he is like so I’ll let that one go. The real problem for me is that the man is just plain crude. Ali G is a great comic creation by Sasha Baron-Cohen. Without a doubt one of the freshest, funniest most anarchic comedy shows on TV at the moment. How he gets away with some of the stuff - I'll never know. Some of his interviews remind me very much of the kinds of things that 'shock-jock' Howard Stern might come up with. Silliness, I know, but done with an innocence of a supposedly 'street wise' character. He gets away with ansking questions because he poses them in an innocence wide eyed way of a 'newcomer'. Frasier for me is a programme that goes in fits and starts, I don’t know if they use different writers for a series but the show is either histerically funny or fairly average. Kelsey Grammer has proved himself a fine comic actor although throughout most of the shows he is the straight fall guy and relies on quick dry wit for the comedy. ...channel 4 bosses and he was given his own show. Respect! The show comprises of Ali mainly interviewing guests and basically taking the piss out of them. The older generation might not find this too appealing because they might not understand the new skool lingo that he uses. ...and very original. He also does another character apart from the jamacian pseudo gangster called bora which again is quite hilarious. He is also notorious for humilating famous people with his interviews. Thanks to Channel 4 for giving him his own show and hope that they will do a repeat. ... Read review

Disadvantages: Ditch the tacky 'Uncovered' series

...Channel 4 is the only terrestrial TV station that has the right blend of safe, regular ratings winners and innovative thought-provoking broadcasting that make it a pleasure to watch. Whatever they pick up on at the moment they seem to have their finger firmly on the viewing public's pulse. The recent furore over Big Brother is a prime example. Hardly a new concept in itself, but it has the nation talking and is already guaranteed to be the rating's hit of the summer. Let's not forgot it is Channel 4 who bought us Ali G, innit? Channel 4 have completely revamped and rejuvenated cricket coverage with their blend of funky music, unusual camera angles and their Q&A section. They've also pulled off a masterstroke by swiping Friends and ER under the corporate noses of Sky TV- surely these 2 programmes alone will ensure the Channel... Read review
