Advantages: Better coverage and highlights are better Disadvantages: Cricket does swap for horse racing
...of Npower and the ECB, Channel 4 has provided the whole of Britain with live coverage which the fans find exciting and thrilling to watch. Channel 4 has brought us many great matches during this last decade, the most memorable being the Ashes win this year with brilliant performances from both teams. If I am looking to watch cricket, Channel 4 is the first place I go.
Another factor that has effected Channel 4 a lot is the amazing ... ...has progressed. Thanks partly to Channel 4. In my opinion, showing cricket coverage on a compulsery channel. This is because not every household have the hardware to view other channels, namely Sky Sports. So people with limited channels can view great matches. This also prevents complaints and contraversy about not being able to watch matches that are either important or are vital to a team's survival in a league or cup.
With the help of Npower and the ECB, Channel 4 has provided the whole of Britain with live coverage which the fans find exciting and thrilling to watch. Channel 4 has brought us many great matches during this last decade, the most memorable being the Ashes win this year with brilliant performances from both teams. If I am looking to watch cricket, Channel 4 is the first place I go.
Another factor that has effected Channel 4 a lot is the amazing and exiting commentry from some of the greats. Some examples would be Richie Benaud (Aus), Michael Atherton (Eng), Mark Slater (Aus), Ian Botham (Eng) and Domonic Cork (Eng). All of these ex - cricketers have provided us with accurate, entertaining and heart stopping cricket. The most experienced is probably good old Richie Benaud. Unfortunatly he has now retired and I am hoping that Graham Thorpe will replace him, because he is a very experienced test and ODI player who also played First Class. He retired this year because of his age and will be missed by many devoted fans. But in my opinion, no one can replace the great Richie Benaud.
Cricket has become more and more popular as the years has progressed.
The only disadvantage that I can see is that the cricket is frequently interupted by the horse racing. This can be rather annoying as you could miss vital sections of the match. Although you can watch uninterupted live coverage on Film 4, not everyone has a wide selection of channels to choose from, so this could be a problem if you get annoyed easily.
Another advantage if you watch Channel 4, but this is only if you have Sky or Sky+, is that there is an interactive service which I have explored. If you have just got in from work, school, etc. you can push the red button and a page will come up telling you everything that has happened so far that day and find results aswell. You can also do a similar thing if you have not got Sky. You can use good old fashioned Teletext. You can find results, live scores and fixtures to see when the next games are on. So you are not completely hindered if you don't have Sky.
Another disadvantage, is that not all matches are shown on Channel 4. Only big matches such as the Ashes, World Cup, World Series and England matches are shown. If you want to watch county matches, you need Sky Sports. Although this is not so bad if you are not a county cricket fan.
Overall, I can say that if you want to watch cricket with all the excitment, Channel 4 is the place to go. Although there are frequent interuptions, you can't beat Channel 4. The channel that helped Britain watch England gain Ashes triumph.
Advantages: A livelier coverage Disadvantages: Rain still stops play
As with Formula One, a commercial TV station has taken over coverage of an established BBC area and has shown them how to do it! The commentary is snappier, more opinionated (maybe they've visited Ciao!)and more varied. Headhunting Richie Benaud (as with F1 and Murray Walker) keeps the touch of authority in the talk-team too.
The gadgetry is used to good effect (the Snickometer and the Red Line overlay for example) and new camera angles spice up ...

Advantages: Has the best overseas coach Disadvantages: Too many old players in the team
relieve the pressure from Nasser Hussain.
Instead the selectors opted for the ?oldies? John Crawley, Dominic Cork and Alec Stewart for the first test. But Crawley and Cork have been the best performers in county cricket this season.
Ian Botham was right when he said that England have taken a huge step backwards by picking these men.
CHANNEL4 TV COVERAGE
The TV coverage of the first test on Channel4 was very impressive. The only part I did not like was a TV advert at the end of every over. I would have preferred adverts to be shown every 30 minutes.
The commentary team was pretty impressive. I thought Mike Atherton was an excellent summariser. Dermot Reeve was quite opinionated.
I loved features such as the snickometer, Hawkeye, lbw graphics etc. In a few years time umpires will be made redundant.
The second test starts ...
Advantages: Tremendous Fan Base and History! Disadvantages: Current Side not as Great as in the Past!
. There was live coverage of the West Indies v New Zealand one-day series. Cricket has truly become a global sport.
As for the West Indies it is now back to the drawing board.
UPDATED May 2003
Unfortunately I have lost track of West Indies cricket over the past few months. So over the weekend I caught up with events via the cricket section on the Channel4 web site.
The web site had loads of information. You could even download your own Richie Benaud.
October 2002 West Indies lost 2-0 in a Test series in India. This included an innings defeat.
December 2002 West Indies easily beat Bangladesh 2-0 in Bangladesh.
WORLD CUP FIRST PHASE EXIT
West Indies provided one of the shocks of the tournament by beating host nation South Africa by 3 runs. I was amazed at this result. I remember a few years ago when they lost most ...
