If you are a student, or younger than 30, Channel 4 will defiantly be one of your favourite channels. Since the days of the wooden block logo, Channel 4 has moved on, bringing entertaining comedies, ground braking documentaries and other controversial programmes. To begin, lets look at the general content…

~CONTENT~
The main focus of Channel 4 is entertainment, rather than news, and has an interesting collection of comedies in it’s schedule. For example Trigger-Happy TV, Smack the Pony, and Friends being some of the best. Another excellent feature of Channel 4 is the innovative and often controversial documentaries, for example Time Team, Anatomy of Disgust and Dispatches. These documentaries are both hard hitting and informative, somewhere the BBC would never go.

Aside from this, Channel 4 has much tongue-in-cheek content, for example Eurotrash, Graham Norton and Beachmate being some. These hilarious, sexually orientated programs make great viewing, and bring a light hearted feel to the week.

Channel 4 use their name to form sectors, for example 4later contains the adult themed programs, 4music contains music, and a recent section ‘DO NOT SLEEP’, which contains a diverse mix of cultural and new age programs.

~QUALITY and QUANTITY of ADVERTISING~
As a commercial channel, C4 relies on advertisers to generate it’s income, however, compared to ITV and Channel 5, C4 has a relatively low advert rate. However, many programs are sponsored, for example all dramas, i.e. teacher are sponsored by Renault. This generate a huge income, whilst still reducing the time we spend staring at boring adverts.

C4 usually run the same sort of Ads as ITV, however, they are less focused on housewives, i.e. no beauty adverts or nappy adverts. The quality of Ads is usually good, and they don’t usually succumb to the mindless advertising of Finance companies, offering to get all your debts paid etc…

~GENERAL LOOK and IMAGE of CHANNEL~
C4 have gone for a no nonsense design for their brand, for example there are no shaded colours, just plain, blocks. Any text on screen is plain and sharp, meaning you can easily see what is going on. This is one of the major appeals to the channel for me because I don’t have to squint to see through difficult background colours.

~GOOD and BAD POINTS~
G:::The Channel caters for a wide audience, although mostly 15-30, with many adult or controversial programs.

B:::They don’t however show many films, and those that they do are not very good. However, with a dedicated film channel devoted to British Film, this is excusable (FilmFour).

G:::Channel 4 provides quality content into the night, whereas channels such as BBC seem to fizzle out at about 9 – very good night time viewing

B:::The news coverage is not very good, with only a few reports throughout the day

~OVERALL~
Channel 4 is an excellent channel, if you are in the right age bracket. If you want hilarious entertainment and great documentaries look no further, however, if you want straightforward pathetic programs like Coronation Street, then go to ITV!!

Their website is also excellent, and links with the programs very well. For example there are often ‘live chats’ with program stars, such as Dom Joly from Trigger Happy TV and the cast of teachers.

This is a scandal! Spy shows featuring sexy women should be shown in prime time! So that all the eggheads and comedy-sock wearers can get home in time from their civil service jobs in time for their mums to make their tea for them as they watch it!! heh heh... cheers, Kaz

Channel 4 shows The Mark Thomas Product and is therefore the greatest channel in the world... EVER! And that's official! Anna

Good op, I enjoy the late night DO NOT SLEEP section and the general quality of their late-night viewing

Channel 4 - review by 7sefton

Advantages: An alternative channel, which has left itself out of the bitter ratings wars. It makes good TV for the sake of it, and brings difficult subjects to the public's attention.
Disadvantages: Not the channel to watch if you like cuddly personalities. Expect the unexpected with C4. Also, if it's good UK dramas your after, you won't find them here.
