Advantages: Challenging, plenty to explore and shoot Disadvantages: Frame-rate not steady, silly story, cannot skip ship sequences
*A review which is primarily based on the single-player experience of the third-person action-adventure game, JetForce Gemini.*
JetForce Gemini sees you taking on the evil tyrant of Mizar in a battle across the universe, and although the story, aimed at children (above the age of eleven - thanks ELSPA), can seem silly in places, the plot twists are simply stupid:
[SPOILERS]
When an asteroid is set on a collision course with Earth, an ancient starship is needed as the JetForce ships won't be able to get there in time. However, not only do the JetForce Team have to search for the ship parts, but they are also asked to save all of the Tribals - as if this doesn't take time (not the only thankless task which is a pain in the ass)! It's a farce as they would crash the starship on the Asteroid, yet still allow for players to travel to ...
Advantages: Best Graphics on the N64, surround sound music and SFX, excellent gameplay Disadvantages: hard to get into, but ultimately rewarding
Further to the previous comments on JetForce Gemini, the game, like any has good points and bad points. While JFG may not be as instantly accessible as other comparable offerings, I found it a hugely enjoyable game to play.
For one, the graphics are simply the best I've seen on the N64. Perhaps JFG's imagery doesn't quite come on par with some of the latest offerings on the Dreamcast and PS2, but for a 64-bit console, these graphics as good as it gets. Each surface lovingly textured, each character carefully animated, each shadow, each reflection, spot on. JFG shows off the console to it's best, at the peak of perfection, with a stunning variety of beautiful locations. Whether it's the stunning courtyard outside Mizar's Palace, with it's shimmering floor, reflecting your every move, the dark corners of some underground industrial ...
Advantages: Shoot, Shoot, Shoot!!!!!!! Disadvantages: None the best shoot em up out
It's a shoot-'em-up, but one quite unlike the rest of the crowd, packing as it does a myriad of cinematic sequences, unusual elements, and a rare visual style. Initially control is limited to one of the JetForce team, but as play progresses two new characters - female character Vela and Lupus the robotic dog - become available, opening up new areas of the maps and introducing new gameplay elements with their special abilities. Players will need to make the most of these powers, as the screen piles up with hordes of enemies at every turn, making for the most trigger happy N64 game around, while a variety of subgames offer the occasional break from such intense action.
Rare fans won't doubt how good JetForce Gemini really is. Newcomers would do well to find out what all the fuss is about. ...
