I bought Charles Worthington’s ‘Dream Hair Perfect Reflection Texturising Wax For Dark Hair Shades’ (core what a mouthful, try saying that one after a night out) on my birthday in February. I am the hair care industry’s dream customer. Firstly, the natural state of my hair is a bedraggled, frizzy, curly, ‘dragged through a hedge backwards’ type mess that always looks like I haven’t brushed it even as I throw my hairbrush down in disgust after trying my hardest to tame it. Secondly because time after time I fall for their claims of ‘new technological advances’ and time after time they don’t live up to their promises and I move on to trying yet another product.
I bought Charles Worthington’s ‘Dream Hair Perfect Reflection Texturising Wax For Dark Hair Shades’ (core what a mouthful, try saying that one after a night out) on my birthday in February. I was going out for a meal in the evening and thought that maybe it was time to give my hair straighteners a well-earned rest and attempt to make my curls look springy, shiny, separated and stunning (well I can but dream!) instead of frizzy and dull. But keep a tight grip on your £4.49, however tempted you may be by this product, because until today my 50ml tub hasn’t seen the light of day since my birthday and believe me it is destined for the bin…
I have to admit that the main reason I chose this product was the way it looked on the shelf, so in one aspect at least, Charles Worthington has got it right with this product. A simple yet attractive looking silver lid atop a double glass pot through which the wax could be seen: bronze in colour and shimmering even under the strange fluorescent lighting of my local Boots. The blurb on the back of the pot informed me that was the wax’s light reflectors in action, which when on your hair are designed to give your hair colour ‘shimmering new depth’ as well as defining and controlling it. Well if this could make my hair look anything like as gorgeous as the sparkly bronze wax looked in the pot I was surely on to a winner, I thought. Plus the wax claims to contain a ‘unique Damage Deflector’, which will reduce oxidation harm from sun, pollution, chlorine and processing. Skin-identical lipids, NMF’s (no I have no idea what these are either, but they sound highly beneficial!) and panthenol are also included, which supposedly increase the strength of your hair by 50%. Bonus!
So I exchanged my cash for a (remarkably heavy considering the small size of it) tub of wax. On the way back to college, being an impatient kind of soul, I fished it out of my Boots carrier, unscrewed the lid and took a deep sniff. To be honest it smelled to me a bit like cocoa butter suntan lotion- quite a nice, rich, slightly sweet smell, but then again one with which you can never get away from the prospect of greasiness. My hair can get quite greasy enough of its own accord when it feels like it, so this smell was the first indication to me that the wax might not be quite as good value for money as I had thought. So I dipped a finger in and my suspicions were confirmed-it had a similar consistency and greasiness to a tub of margarine!
Having spent nearly a fiver on this wax though, I wasn’t about to not use it- even if it made my hair look like it belonged in a frying pan. So following the directions on the tub I rubbed a fingertip-sized scoop between my hands and ran it lightly through the top layers of my hair.
So was my hair shimmering, defined and controlled as promised after using this wax? In a word, no. My hair looked duller and more lifeless than usual, my curls weren’t defined or controlled and the wax simply made my hair really really greasy and quite sticky- so much so that I had to go and immediately take a shower in order to make my hair presentable. The only way in which it helped to hold a style (I tried tying my hair in a ponytail briefly while I tried and failed to convince myself that I could go out with hair like this) was by making my hair look and feel like it hadn't been washed in weeks. In general, the less clean your hair is, the easier it is to tie it back, so I suppose it did help control my hair in a way, but personally I would always go for clean hair falling out of a ponytail over manky, greasy hair in one.
So the straighteners didn’t get their rest and I might as well have rubbed a fingertip-sized scoop of margarine through my hair for all the good this wax did me. I wasted a fiver, don’t do the same!
