FC stands for Football Club and not Foreigners Club as some people might think. I am sure I wasn’t the only one who thought Chelsea was on the way up, up and up and who was surprised when the Big Change struck the club.
Has it all been worth it?
Well, at the time of writing this review they have just put an end to a run of back form (there is no such thing as bad luck when it comes to a dived stretch of ninety minutes of football) by beating Manchester City. Yeah, City, not United (Sorry City fans!). It was, I think, the first match played with the new boys being, somewhat, settled in and in the first signs of the new, slightly more defensive formation. It works. Chelsea has the big guns up front and Chelsea has the cash to ensure that they always have big guns up in front, so, what they need to concentrate working on is pulling up the foundations of the team and of the club. Like Manchester United (I’m afraid that comparisons are inevitable) has so successfully done, Chelsea needs to cultivate more home grown talent. Now, this some xenophobic reaction to Chelsea’s current cosmopolitan line-up, this is a statement of basic club economics. Home grown talent is a cheaper and a better investment. Even if the club spends hundreds of thousands of pounds in training a half dozen promising young stars and only get one first team player as a result (which seems unlikely) it will still be cheaper than buying a multi-million pound player from Holland or France.
I think Chelsea will start to move forward again - even if these current run of changes put them in stasis or even drag them down a little bit. Arsenal is the same; yes, I might run the risk of getting punched if I was to express this opinion in London but it’s fairly easy to bundle the bigger London clubs together.
Why is this opinion on Ciao? Why, even, has Ciao provided space for opinions like this? I can only assume it is because of the ubiquitous merchandise and trappings that are currently sold at hugely inflated prices to keep the club afloat, pay huge salaries and import star players. My advice would is to “buy” Chelsea. This is a good time to start picking up their gear. At the minute they are strangely low in the League and I imagine some of the fans will be rather disappointed! This mean that it’s unlikely enthusiasm will be high and memorabilia sold for over the odds prices.
