Advantages: History, Architecture, Disadvantages: There will be a charge
What is it about cathedrals that attract so many visitors? I love to visit Churches and Cathedrals, not for religious purposes and not wholly for the architecture (although yes it does interest me) but there is something more that brings me and numerous others to these sacred places. There is an atmosphere within demanding respect and infusing the visitor with awe and serenity. Philip Larkin summed up this feeling in his poem, ?Church Going?;
?It pleases me to stand in silence here;
A serious house on serious earth it is?.
ChesterCathedral is one such place. Walking through the doors, a silence pervades. People talk in hushed whispers and stand or sit gazing in wonder at the carvings and interior architecture.

The Arctic cathedral in Tromsų stood out amongst the smaller houses surrounding it and was visible long before we approached the bridge to cross over to the mainland. The unusual shape representing the shape of a Sami (the people who tend the reindeer) tent and the iciness of a glacier was built in 1965 on a site that was originally a bunker, being close to Russia they were prepared. The huge white walls form an A shape and there are windows at both ends of the building. The walls are 11 pieces of concrete covered with Aluminium, which represent the 11 apostles left after the betrayal of Christ. Between the wall sections is glass which lets light into the church, supplying much of the inside light in the church, especially during the midnight sun season.

One of the great buildings of the world and it is the largest cathedral in Britain and 5th largest in the world. The cathedral has high gothic arches and bells in the tower. The construction of the cathedral was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott. Car Parking is available at the Cathedral, with a charge of £1. Multi stormy car parking is available nearer the city centre in Mount Pleasant and in neighboring Duke Street. There is some limited free street parking available. Entry to the cathedral is free of charge, but donations are invited - £3.00 (?4/$5US) is suggested. Prices for the Tower are £4.25 with concessions at £2.50. A family ticket for up to 2 adults and 3 children is £10.00.
