Advantages: Great fun to drive, nippy and reliable Disadvantages: Strange pedals!
The Polo 1.4 was the first car that I ever bought myself so will always be quite special in a weird kind of way!
I traded in my old battered Fiesta that my mum and dad had bought me and purchased a VW 1.4 Polo Match special edition for around £10000.
The car came with quite a few extras for the money including manual air conditioning and an electric sunroof (very nifty gadget on such a small car!) I am not too sure why the car had both a sunroof and air conditioning though as you only really needed one or the other! It also came with metallic paint and I chose the Silver colour which was great as it hardly shows up any dirt at all and comes up very nicely when it's polished.
I owned the 3 door version and you did have to be careful with the front doors as they are very big and heavy and can sometimes blow away in heavy wind ...
Advantages: Very comfortable & v.good drive Disadvantages: Reliability
My first car was, or more specifically, is an L-Reg Clio 1.4 RT, second hand, and although it does have it's ups and downs, like any hatchback does, it is predominantly a good drive.
Comfort - this is one of the first things you can analyse from a car, and the Clio comes out well. It's seat patterning appears to be from the Picasso sketchbook (not that that hinders the comfort mind!), but the seats are shaped perfectly and produce optimum comfort for the driver and passengers
Space - this is always a touchy subject with hatchbacks, due to the simple reason being the lack of it! Although the front seats are adjustable, and therefore the space for those two in the car is fine, if people are in any of the rear three seats, particular grown-ups, they mind find it uncomfortable, and be mighty relieved when the journey is over! Although ...

Ford Fiesta Ghia 1.4 TDCi 5dr
Background I have owned my 2004 Ford Fiesta 1.4 TDCi since it was 6 months old and have traveled at the time of writing (OCT 2007) 25000 miles though the car has done 30000 in total. The car lacks in one area, which is acceleration, however, this does not detract from a 5-star rating because if you're purchasing a diesel at this price point you should be doing it for the excellent economy - not for super fast performance...
The Drive The car is great fun to drive, and surprisingly nippy round town, the handling feels safe and secure and corners neatly. It is not a performance hatchback so don't expect to be 'burning-off' your average family saloon on a head to head, however the car has a respectable top speed (102mph) and cruises quite nicely on motorways at 70. Not as smooth as larger ...
