One tip I can give for purchasing a highchair is to wait until your baby is born. I never realised that I would be weaning my daughter so early. Due to the fact that she couldn't sit unaided when I started to feed her solids, a wooden fixed seat (which is what I originally wanted) would not have been any good.
The Chicco Polly Double Phase highchair is brilliant. Not only is it a delight to look at (although my mother disagrees!), it is easy to use and fold away.
I purchased the highchair from Babies R Us with a £5 discount voucher for £95 but you can get it for about £84 on the Kiddicare website.
Its features include:
Four position reclining seat - this has been very handy due to my daughter's young age. It is apparently useful if your child falls asleep. Mine hasn't yet.
Several height positions - excellent for sitting at the dining room table or near the floor when playing.
Two part tray - this has a section for playing underneath and a clip on tray that can go over for putting food on (easy to clean too).
Several tray positions which allows the tray to be close to or far away from your baby.
5 point restraint harness which was easy to adjust even for my baby when she was about 3 months old (although Chicco say the chair is only suitable from 6 months).
Wheels that can be locked or used to move the highchair nearer to you.
The leg rest has 3 positions and can be upright or slanted to provide appropriate support.
2 part seat padding so that the top layer can be removed as your baby gets larger. They can both be removed for washing.
Freestanding when folded.
Weight 9.2Kg
Open size 80 x 54 x 109cm
Closed size 25 x 54 x 90cm
I find the chair easier to manipulate than others I have seen, used and tried in the shops. It is a bit pricy, but then it should last until age 3. It is really sturdy so I'm sure it would suffice a second child.
Now that my friends are also weaning, I've had the opportunity to use a number of different highchairs. I am very pleased that I chose this one. All my friends compliment it and I find that I can reach my daughter much more easily in it. Once other highchairs are up, I seem to find that she's further away from me or too low in the seat with the tray up too high. This can give me backache as I try to reach across or bend in a strange way just to get the spoon in her mouth.
