Review of Virent Ova! Viret Perna! Green Eggs and Ham - Dr. Seuss by
frkurt
Advantages: The eggs are still green! The ham is still green!
Disadvantages: Latin, alas, is obscure...
...Non mi placent, O Pincerna,
Virent ova! Viret perna!
‘Ova’ is a recognisable word even to those who have not studied Latin – the ovum means ‘egg’, the ovaries of course being the place eggs are produced. ‘Perna’ is the word for ham. (Ironically, the word ‘ovum’ is a neuter term in Latin, rather than female; the word ‘perna’ is a feminine word.) The word ‘Pincerna’ means waiter or server (it can even mean butler). Virent/viret is actually a verb, ... ...roughly translate into
They do not please me, O waiter,
Eggs that are green! Ham that is green!
Yes, I know, it suffers a bit in translation; imagine the power of poetry and how sometime this can be lost in translation. Thus, it is important to understand the literary license with which Jennifer Tunberg and Terence Tunberg have translated the text. They have made an effort to make sure the meter, rhyme, and story fit the text as a Latin text, ...

Review of Dr. Seuss: A Classic Treasury - Dr. Seuss by
antoniame
Advantages: very funny, a good introduction to poetry
Disadvantages: you need to read it first, to save you looking like you can't read infront of your kids!
...the world as the beloved Dr. Seuss, was born in 1904 on Howard Street in Springfield, Massachusetts. Ted's father, Theodor Robert, and grandfather were brewmasters in the city. His mother, Henrietta Seuss Geisel, often soothed her children to sleep by "chanting" rhymes remembered from her youth. Ted credited his mother with both his ability and desire to create the rhymes for which he became so well known. ...

A Visit to hospital
Review of Katie Goes to the Hospital - Brimax Books by
lyndsayw
Advantages: helps children if they are worried
Disadvantages: could be a little longer
...going to review is called Katie goes to the Hospital.
On the front cover there is a blue trim around the edge and the back ground is in yellow the title is in big red letters with a picture of Katie sitting on the hospital bed holding her teddy with a nurse talking to her and her mum next to her.
Katie has to go into hospital to have a operation the book explains how Katie doesn't want to go as she is scared it goes threw step by step of what she ... ...to write to much as its only a short story and i will spoil it.
The pictures in the book are lovely and the detail is great the child can see clearly what's going on if they cant read and is looking at the book by themselves.
I love this book as it helps children realise that its not all that bad to go into hospital and have a operation so if your child is going in to hospital i think this book is a must as it will help them to stop being so worried ...

Dark Vs Light
Review of The Spook's Battle (Wardstone Chronicles) - Joseph Delaney by
slik321
Advantages: everything
Disadvantages: just want more and more
...to live.... well not really. The spooks battle is the fourth books by Joseph Delaney in his exuberantly rich children's series, the Wardstone chronicles. The series follows the life of young Tom Ward who is the seventh son of a seventh son and is sent by his mam and dad to join John Gregory who is an old and experienced spook (a spook is someone who battles the dark e.g. witches and Bogart's) to teach him the trade. As you may have already rightly ... ...force to be reckoned with. The Spooks Battle is the fourth book in this originally simple story yet so superbly written. It is set in the County, (in a BBC interview the author revealed that "In truth, that county is Lancashire") if you would like to read the profile of Joseph Delaney you can copy the link beneath into your web browser and take a gander for yourself. http://www.bbc.co.uk/lancashire/content/articles/2007/07/09/josephdela neyfeature.shtml
