Pullman reveals the trump card!!!
Review of His Dark Materials III: The Amber Spyglass - Philip Pullman by
pmcds
Advantages: Brilliant end to a brilliant trilogy. Short chapters: ideal stopping places
Disadvantages: Much longer than the others. Very descriptive in the middle.
A little short of amonth ago, I woke up on Christmas morning and opened my presents. One of these was Philip Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' trilogy. I had eagerly awaited these (guessing I would get them for Christmas) and tucked into them immediately.
The first two in the trilogy, namely 'Northern Lights' and 'The Subtle Knife', leave you thristy for more. Pullman creates a fantastic tale over the course of the trilogy, leaving the reader needing ... ...first two books, over 500 pages long, and at points in the middle, it seems to drag slightly.I found myself pushing through long descriptive paragraphs without incidences of conversation to break up the monotony. These descriptions were integral to the plot, as is everything, but I felt Pullman was close to going off at a tangent in these parts.
Pullman touches heavily on the religious nature of the books in this third and final installment. I had ...

Here Comes the Sun
Review of Here Comes the Sun - Phil Gillam by
Martinscholes
Advantages: Hard to put down
Disadvantages: None
...moving as Phil Gillam's Here comes the sun was sometime in the
mid-1970s.
Here Comes the Sun is a novel in the true sense of the word. It
contains material that is indeed novel. It is imbued with a sort of dreamlike, otherworldly quality and contains scenes that can amaze and shock the reader. But it always delights. It is set in the county town of Shropshire, Shrewsbury, and it follows
the life of the proponent, Patrick Grant as he moves through ... ...definitely not the case with Here Comes the Sun.
Without exception all of the characters, even the minor ones, are
well-drawn, vibrant, warm and alive. So well-drawn that it comes as a
something of a surprise to find out that you could not have stood next to Patrick Grant's dad, Cecil, drinking a pint of bitter in the Hole in the
Wall, as Cecil Grant is a fictional character.
There can be a risk of book reviews of a novel descending into cliché

Mr Strong and the Flood
Review of Mr Strong and the Flood - Roger Hargreaves by
sewbizzie
Advantages: Fun story
Disadvantages: Small writing
Mr Strong and the flood is a book in the new story library from the Mr Men collection.
Mr Strong is a square shape with little arms and is red in colour and he wears a green bowler hat.
THE STORY
The beginning of the story tells us how strong Mr Strong is, he put his Wellingtons on and pulled so hard that he put his foot right through the bottom and he pushed his umbrella up so hard that it turned inside out! It also goes on to tell us what he ... ...go on to read how Mr Strong goes out for a walk in the rain and tells us that it has been raining for nearly a whole week. As Mr Strong is out on his walk he meets Farmer Field who is very worried as his sheep are all stuck out in the field which is surrounded by rain water.
How will Mr Strong help Farmer Fields???
MY OPINION
This book belong to my middle son who is 3 as he chose it due to red being his favourite colour!
All of my boys enjoy ...

I can count!
Review of Count on Goz - Steve Weatherill by
danielalong
Advantages: Lovely way to start to count
Disadvantages: None
Count On Goz by Steve Weatherill
A great way for very young children to be introduced to counting up to 5 and to learn about number formation. Children do tend to enjoy lift the flap books, so it's almost certainly going to be a winner.
Many children will already be familiar with Goz, the appealing yellow gosling. This time, we meet Goz in the early morning, near the river when everything is quiet.
A little yellow goose is bottoms up... "Who's ... ...as developing an ability to count and recognise numbers to 5. The simple text means that it is suitable for National Curriculum Reading, because children can easily see and be encouraged to point out capital letters, full stops and question marks. Because the animals are easily distinguishable, even if they can't read the words, they can be encouraged to use picture clues.
A useful book for very young children who are beginning to count.

The amazing Terry does it again!
Review of The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents - Terry Pratchett by
atytyut2434
Advantages: Talking Rats!
Disadvantages: A Trombone with keys
...from lack of food.
The rats are great characters and their gradual discovery that the book they thought was factual is a childrens story. A mayors curious daughter who spends her time searching for stories that she is sure must exist.
This book has a great outcome, a brilliant match of who is the greatest Rat Piper with Keith managing to win using a trombone (which has keys if you own a 1st edition but has been corrected to not having keys in later ...
