a fantastic twist on a traditional fairy tale
Review of Seriously Silly Stories Collection - Laurence Anholt by deeleybopper

Advantages: witty, laugh out loud, loved by children
Disadvantages: wish they were colour pictures

If you want a great story or set of stories to read, to children 6 and above, then I can highly recommend these books. fabulously written by Laurence Anholt, these stories take well known and loved fairy tales, and twist them on their head, giving a great contemporary twist. and they are great value for money - very affordable with pocket money. for example...in Little Red Riding Wolf, the villan of the story is NOT the wolf, but its the big bad ...
...animals of the forest, and she loves nothing better than picking on our hero - Wolfie...or as the author calls him "cutesy wolfie cub!" my class of 6 and 7 year olds absolutely howled and roared with this story, and let out an almighty cheer when the hero of the story changes the big bad girlie for the better. and the hat the wolf wears had me in hysterics too! The pictures are truly brilliant - I can compare it to the simspons in that you look ... Read review

POP-UP WITH POPPY CAT
Review of Poppy Cat's Dream - Lara Jones by matthewsmum

Advantages: A very sweet children's story; beautiful illustrations and artwork
Disadvantages: None

Poppy Cat’s Dream is the sort of book that makes you wish you were three years old again. Then again, it could be that I just haven’t grown up yet! My son received this book as a Christmas present last year and it really has been a favourite of his (and mine) over the past few months. Not only is it a lovely story for getting your little bundle of joy off to sleep at night with its rhyming verses and vivid illustrations, it also brings to life Poppy ...
...the plot, but given that Poppy Cat's Dream is written for very young children, I anticipate that it will be the mummies and daddies who will potentially be reading the review, so I hope no one minds if I cover the book in greater detail. ***The Story*** Poppy Cat is a very cute little pussy cat who is the proud owner of a sweet little teddy bear called....’Bear’. Poppy Cat always likes Bear to sleep next to her in bed, but one night, ... Read review

Alice Through The Looking Glass- Lewis Carroll
Review of Alice Through the Looking Glass - Lewis Carroll by ironic_anathema

Advantages: Very fun to read
Disadvantages: None!

...book as the first one, Alice in Wonderland, and it's definitely in my Top 10 list of favourite books. From the surreal train journey at the beginning to the whole journey across the chess board, it's brilliantly absurd! Not just for children, because teenagers and adults can also get a lot out of it...maybe you can try reading between the lines to find Carroll's hidden messages. It's not just a kids' story! In addition, the characters are appealing ... Read review

I can count!
Review of Count on Goz - Steve Weatherill by danielalong

Advantages: Lovely way to start to count
Disadvantages: None

Count On Goz by Steve Weatherill A great way for very young children to be introduced to counting up to 5 and to learn about number formation. Children do tend to enjoy lift the flap books, so it's almost certainly going to be a winner. Many children will already be familiar with Goz, the appealing yellow gosling. This time, we meet Goz in the early morning, near the river when everything is quiet. A little yellow goose is bottoms up... "Who's ...
...as developing an ability to count and recognise numbers to 5. The simple text means that it is suitable for National Curriculum Reading, because children can easily see and be encouraged to point out capital letters, full stops and question marks. Because the animals are easily distinguishable, even if they can't read the words, they can be encouraged to use picture clues. A useful book for very young children who are beginning to count.
