Having fun down on the farm!
Review of Muddle Farm - Axel Scheffler by kingfisher111

Advantages: A great magnetic play book!
Disadvantages: none!

...quite simple telling of Farmer Muddle and the fact that everything is in a bit of a muddle on his farm. The four pages also progress throughout a typical day starting with when the animals wake up, moving on to when they eat and eventually with them all getting ready to sleep at night! On each of the pages though your child is asked to do something specific with the magnetic animals. For example on one page they have to place the adult animals next ...
...to the food they are likely to eat. This can prompt quite a lot of discussion about the different animals and the sorts of things they do. On the first page the children are encouraged to make all the different animal noises which I'm sure you can imagine is often a bit noisy. Finally, on the last page all the animals are put to bed and they can go back in their barn again. Peace at last! My youngest daughter was given this for her second birthday ... Read review

The Gloamglozer will get you...
Review of Beyond The Deepwoods - Paul Stewart by CharleneC

Advantages: Fun plotlines, with a deeper edge.
Disadvantages: Not for teenage readers, slightly childish style

...18 years older, and so beyond the age of "child" kept me gripped and after I had finished I went out immedietely to buy the next books in the Twig saga. The story was fun and exciting, with brilliant illustrations to add to the reading experience. That is what reading this book was like. It opens up a whole new world of fantasy for the reader, and whilst the book is rich with description and information, it leaves just enough tantalising space for ...
...fulfilling journey. The main character and hero of the story, Twig, brought up by the woodtroll Spelda, is a young boy in the first book of the Edge Chronicles. He goes on an exciting adventure when sent away by his woodtroll "Mother" (he does not realise he isadopted) to stay with his cousin Snetterbark, because he is in danger. On the way, he strays from the path and meets many weird magical creatures, both his friends and foes, such as the bloodoak ... Read review

Shark attack!
Review of Sharks (Lift - the-flap) - Peter Scott by danielalong

Advantages: Age appropriate amount of information
Disadvantages: None

Pop up sharks Sharks seem to be something which fascinate young children , and recently Little Miss has been a tad obsessed with dinosaurs, so we bought this. The link? She read somewhere that when dinosaurs died out some of the sea creatures who could live in very cold waters lived, and started asking me questions about marine life. Not being an expert, something had to be done. I have always liked usborne books, and this was simple enough for ...
...and life. These are: About Sharks (naturally enough); Hungry Hunters; Baby sharks; Whale sharks; Hammerheads; Speedy sharks; Strange sharks. Each section is “set” in the ocean, with blue background, and the sharks and other sea creatures and plant life being part of the background. Any information is given in small bite size pieces, small enough for children to read without getting bored, and containing facts they will be interested in – for example, ... Read review

I can count!
Review of Count on Goz - Steve Weatherill by danielalong

Advantages: Lovely way to start to count
Disadvantages: None

Count On Goz by Steve Weatherill A great way for very young children to be introduced to counting up to 5 and to learn about number formation. Children do tend to enjoy lift the flap books, so it's almost certainly going to be a winner. Many children will already be familiar with Goz, the appealing yellow gosling. This time, we meet Goz in the early morning, near the river when everything is quiet. A little yellow goose is bottoms up... "Who's ...
...as developing an ability to count and recognise numbers to 5. The simple text means that it is suitable for National Curriculum Reading, because children can easily see and be encouraged to point out capital letters, full stops and question marks. Because the animals are easily distinguishable, even if they can't read the words, they can be encouraged to use picture clues. A useful book for very young children who are beginning to count.
