Amelia Jayne series
Review of Amelia Jane Series - Enid Blyton by rojm

Advantages: a great read for young girls
Disadvantages: none

...old fashioned. We saw the Amelia Jayne books and bought her one I didn't think she would actually finish it, she did over a weekend. She has since read a second one and is on to her third. The books are about a naughty doll who plays tricks on the other toys and they get their own back. To a young child these books are very interesting and make great conversation if you like to chat about what they have read. If your little girl likes reading or ... Read review

Diamond review   Welcome To Your Second Childhood
Review of A Children's Treasury of Milligan. Classic Stories and Poems - Spike Milligan by silverstreak

Advantages: Silly, hilarious fun
Disadvantages: None

A few years ago, my son's class of five and six-year-olds was asked to go home and with the help of a parent, write down a few lines from a favourite poem, which would be read out to the rest of the class the following day. Unfortunately, the teacher was none too impressed with my son's choice, nor I suspect, with me for condoning it, but what she hadn't realised was that I'd had the devil of a job talking him out of his original suggestion. Here's ...
...a cloud That floats aloft o'er dale and hills, When all at once I came upon My dog being sick on the daffodils." And this is what he'd wanted to write: "Monkey, monkey, monkey, Sitting in a tree. Pulling funny faces - Please pull one for me. Pull one for my daddy, Pull one for my mum, But when it comes to teacher, Turn round and show her yer bum!" So you see, things might have been far worse had I not put my foot down, not that his teacher ... Read review

Great for cheering you up!!
Review of Angus, Thongs and full frontal Snogging - Louise Rennison by cathtucker06

Advantages: Absolutely brilliant
Disadvantages: You might just wet yourself!!

...needed cheering up. After reading Angus, thongs and full frontal snogging I went out and bought the other confessions of Georgia Nicolson. I haven't laughed so much in ages and I mean proper laugh out loud laughter!! The tales of georgia, her cat and her little sister Libby had me in stitches and got me to thinking about what I was like at this age. I could relate to many of the experiences!! This is your typical teenage story about the trials ...
...on our lives. However Louise Rennison does not skirt around the sensitive issues, she confronts them head on in a way most teenagers would be able to relate to. Georgia is a 14 year old girl with a crush on an 18 year old boy - subtly named The Sex God.This story starts the journey of Georgia and her friends into womanhood and their first steps towards maturity! Sneaking around the back garden of the Sex Gods Girlfriend and streaking naked down ... Read review

How small is this house?
Review of A Squash and a Squeeze - Julia Donaldson by vickigroth

Advantages: A gentle rhyming text
Disadvantages: none

A squash and a squeeze This is a children's book written by Julia Donaldson, author of 'The Gruffalo' and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. It is a 24 page book published by Macmillan at a cost of £5.99. It is her first book published in 1993 which started off as a song for a children's television show. Julia writes in what was to become her usual style of rhyme to produce this wonderful text. A woman is complaining that her house is "a squash and ...
...next piece of advice is a "curious plan" but a very clever one. Just how does he make her house less of "a squash and a squeeze"? This story will have children rolling on the floor with laughter as the animals get into all sorts of trouble in the small house. The story has a clever moral as do many of her stories, which is perhaps why I enjoy reading them. This is also available on Audio CD read by Imelda Staunton and Steven Pacey and is an easy ...
