Welcome To Your Second Childhood
Review of A Children's Treasury of Milligan. Classic Stories and Poems - Spike Milligan by
silverstreak
Advantages: Silly, hilarious fun
Disadvantages: None
A few years ago, my son's class of five and six-year-olds was asked to go home and with the help of a parent, write down a few lines from a favourite poem, which would be read out to the rest of the class the following day. Unfortunately, the teacher was none too impressed with my son's choice, nor I suspect, with me for condoning it, but what she hadn't realised was that I'd had the devil of a job talking him out of his original suggestion. Here's ... ...a cloud
That floats aloft o'er dale and hills,
When all at once I came upon
My dog being sick on the daffodils."
And this is what he'd wanted to write:
"Monkey, monkey, monkey, Sitting in a tree.
Pulling funny faces - Please pull one for me.
Pull one for my daddy, Pull one for my mum,
But when it comes to teacher, Turn round and show her yer bum!"
So you see, things might have been far worse had I not put my foot down, not that his teacher ...

"An unforgettable story of first love"
Review of A Little Love Song - Michelle Magorian by
kelr101
Advantages: Delights of experiencing first love, and discovering yourself
Disadvantages: Discovering the social attitudes and restraints of the war era
...life, Rose is prepared for a 3 month adventure in the quiet seaside town of Salmouth, and to finally re-discover her passion for reading and writing. It is 1943, and the war is still violently raging on throughout the world, so Rose and Diana's mother, an actress has decided to leave the girls to the care of Miss Hutchinson, in order to entertain the troops and provide them with some level of morale. Unfortunately Miss Hutchinson has also been called ... ...that this summer will be a journey of self-discovery. For both girls the summer is eventful, passionate, entertaining, educational and joyful, but it is especially so for young Rose who unearths a love story set in an earlier war, a story that becomes more lifelike as she falls in love herself.
Each character in "A Little Love Song" is well described, and detailed throughout the novel. Diana and Rose, the beautiful swan and her ugly duckling are ...

“Mummy’s got wobbly bits”
Review of A Piece of Cake - Jill Murphy by
ilusvm
Advantages: funny, great illustrations, simple language
Disadvantages: none!

A Piece of Cake
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
This is another children’s book by Jill Murphy which I love because it demonstrates a rather true portrayal of family life using the Large family (a family of elephants). The book was first published in 1989 by Walker Books London. The book is a hardback book, which cost £6.99 although it is possible to find varying prices on the Internet.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The story
... ...funny. The story is about a family of elephants; Mrs Large, Mr Large, Lester and Luke (the sons), Laura (the daughter) and the baby. The story begins with Mrs Large deciding that she is too fat, her children disagree apart from the baby who says “Mummy’s got wobbly bits” (I love that sentence although when I was little my mum wasn’t impressed when I repeated it and directed it at her!!) and so she puts the whole family on a healthy living diet, the ...

Anne of Green Gables
A novel by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
This edition published by George G Harap & Co Ltd. First published in Great Britain in 1925.
256 pages long
*****Kate Meets Anne for the First Time*****
When I was 11, during a particularly boring Latin Lesson, in a top floor, stuffy classroom, in deepest, coldest December, I discovered a book that would change my reading habits forever. From a young age I had loved books, as much for the ... ...enough to read all about Anne Shirley and her madcap adventures in Avonlea!
*****The Book*****
Anne Shirley is an orphan. She is adopted by mistake by brother and sister Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. They thought they were adopting a boy until red-headed Anne shows up - being the kindly souls they are, they take her on and welcome her into their home, Green Gables - a farm in Avonlea, on Prince Edward Island, off the coast of Novia Scotia
