child abuse that was accepted as norm!
Review of Chinese Cinderella - Adeline Yen Mah by
pixie65
Advantages: beautifully written and factual
Disadvantages: a chilling insight into cruel traditions
Chinese Cinderella - an emotional journey of survival. This book was recommended to me by a fellow colleague teaching the same year group and planniing for next term's literacy unit ( Stories from other cultures)
I managed to buy this book Tuesday morning and was so engrossed by this little girl's journey that didn't put it down until completed.
GENRE
Historical Fiction / Autoboigraphy. Although listed under children's Fiction I would encourage ... ...book comes in a bright Chinese red cover with an endearing photograph of Adeline inset and beautiful flower designs around the corners. There is a sequel in a blue cover so don't be confused by the 2. The issue I purchased was a Puffin, paperback priced at £5.99.
CONTENTS
There are many references to the history of Chinese politics/war. Especially good are the references to the style and art of Chinese writing,(chapter 22 is the orginal story of ...

One Good Turn leads to Another!
Review of Brave Bitsy and the Bear - Angela McAllister by
kingfisher111
Advantages: lovely story and illustrations
Disadvantages: none!
...that Bitsy has to be brave and protect herself from the scary big bear, but in actual fact that is not what the story is about at all! It is actually about two different acts of kindness, and because of this, is a good one to share with young children.
The story starts when poor Bitsy, who was going through the forest with her little girl owner, falls out of a pocket. She is scared but knows that she needs to try and find her way home so she sets ... ...is where she shows how brave she is!) she sets off, taking a ball of wool to unravel as a trail, hoping to find him. The weather is really bad and her worst hopes are realised when she sees the big bear having fallen asleep on the groud with no protection. Bitsy is unable to help him on her own though, but is soon joined by other woodland creatures who all help to make a mossy blanket to cover him for the winter! Now Bear is safe and Bitsy is reassured ...

Are you a Fattypuff or Thinifer?
Review of Fattypuffs and Thinifers - Andre Maurois by
EmmaAdams
Advantages: Very amusing, different
Disadvantages: Young children may not understand or be as interested.
...that this book entitled " Fattypuffs and Thinifers" by Andre Maurois is bound to make for interesting reading. And I was completely right. I read the book and didn't really understand as I was only ickle, but I was clever enough to know that this novel was a cleverly thought up tale with some kind of message to it. Since that fateful chance finding my schools pitiful library of the novel, its title had been carefully filed away in the darkest cavern ... ..." Fattypuffs and Thinifers" is a story about two young brothers Edmund (who is fat) and Terry (who is thin) who whilst out one day with their father, stumble across an escalator hidden in some rocks which takes them to the Country Under the Earth. Once there the usually inseperable brothers are seperated by their weight and carted off on two different boats to two completely different countries under the earth.
Edmund is taken to the land of the ...

There was indeed life before Bob the Builder...
Review of Winnie the Pooh: Complete Collection of Stories and Poems - E.H. Shepard, A.A. Milne by
Lizamabug
Advantages: Beautifully presented, timeless stories and poems
Disadvantages: Sometimes challenging flow, not to be confused with Disney!
There are some products that you get genuinely excited about reviewing and for me, this is one of them. Who hasn't heard of Winnie-the-Pooh? He's become a household name thanks to his association with Disney and the wide variety of films and merchandise they've produced of him and his friends over the years. This gorgeous special edition has been produced to commemorate Pooh's 75th anniversary; a remarkable age for a children's fictional character ... ...is now the fourth generation of my family to sit listening to these stories and I can't think of any other character that has maintained popularity through so many generations.
For those of you that don't know the story of where Pooh began, let me start by telling you his birth was not attended by Disney executives. No, he was the creation of aspiring author Alan Alexander Milne: Milne was born in 1882 in Hampstead, London to Sarah and John Milne ...
