Not just a book.
Review of The Jolly Postman - Allan Ahlberg by
leilla
Advantages: This takes you on a fantastic journey through fairytale land -its not just a book!
Disadvantages: It is impossible for a child to share this - buy them one each!
...this clever story. It is the tale of the jolly postman who delivers mail to familiar fairy tale characters. Theres a birthday card for baby bear (of the three bears), a letter to the big bad wolf from the three little pigs, a postcard to the giant from Jack (from the beanstalk)- there is even a story within the story (a tiny story about cinderella). The amount of detail placed in each envelope is amazing and I still find something new each time I ...

FUNNYBONES
Review of Funnybones: Bumps in the Night - Allan Ahlberg by
Joe_D_L
Advantages: Good childrens story book
Disadvantages: none
Another book in the truly original 'funny bones' series, however in this book the Big skeleton and the Little skeleton have a bit of a bad night. I like this book, plus all the others, they are unlike any other, they don't stereotype a typical family or anything like that, they just tell the story of 2 skeletons living in a dark dark house.
~story~
As like all of the books in the series it starts off the same way just a little different, 'In a ... ...is walking the dog and Little Skeleton is reading a comic, however LS runs out and crashes into BS on the stairs, so they phone for Dr Bones, and he makes them all better. Now, with a few bandages on, LS is painting a picture, whereas BS is making a chair inside the same night school. They both come running out to show one another, but once again crash and once again call for Dr Bones. Now with more bandages on they take their dog on a walk, and ...

Burglar Bill
Review of Burglar Bill - Allan Ahlberg, Janet Ahlberg by
AJ26
Advantages: Nice Pictures, Happy Ending, Story with a moral
Disadvantages: Some children might be afraid of Burglars.
Burglar Bill is a paperback childrens book written by Janet and Allan Ahlberg it is aimed at children from around 4 upwards. It is short enough that you could read it all to a 4 year old but would also appeal to older children who could read it themselves.
Authors
Its written and illustrated by the same people who wrote the Jolly Postman, Each Peach, Pear Plum and Peepo. These are all very popular childrens books and this is no exception.
... ...Bill is a burglar living in his house eating his "stolen fish and chips" with a "cup of stolen tea" and going off to work stealing things then comes home for a "stolen breakfast" then goes to sleep in his "stolen bed". We follow Bill while he is at work where among the many things he steals is a big brown box. Later that morning he hears a noise which sounds like a police car, it gets louder and louder until he realises that it's a baby which is ...

A funny story about scary things
Review of Funnybones - Janet, Allan Ahlberg by
lorna_call
Advantages: Fun images of perhaps scary things
Disadvantages: A bit too repetitive
Funnybones
Funnybones is a children's book, written by Allan Ahlberg and illustrated by his wife Janet. Funnybones is the first in a series of books written about the adventures of three skeletons; a big skeleton, a little skeleton and a dog skeleton. It has also been made into a cartoon series, but I cannot remember seeing the cartoon. The stories are aimed at children who are about school age, I am assuming this as there is no indication on the ... ...am reviewing is the original Funnybones and that is its title, other titles in the series are "Mystery Tour", "The Pet Shop", "The Black Cat", "Skeleton Crew", etc. The story is quite a simple story, it is night time and the skeletons are a little bored and decide to take the dog for a walk to alleviate the boredom, and they also hope to frighten someone. The story follows their adventures on the walk. Firstly they visit the park, whilst in the park ...

Once upon a nursery rhyme!
Review of Each Peach, Pear, Plum - Allan Ahlberg by
kingfisher111
Advantages: lovely story and illustrations
Disadvantages: none
...of these people meeting with each other basically to have a picnic. Children don't necessarily need to know the original rhymes and tales, but I think it adds to the enjoyment if they do!
The story starts on the first page with:
Each Peach Pear Plum
I spy Tom Thumb
This is accompanied by a delightful illustration and the challenge is to actually spy Tom Thumb who is well hidden up a tree. As you turn the pages, the character you have spied on ... ...the Wicked Witch, Robin Hood. Each of these characters are introduced through a rhyming couplet, and they also have to be spied in the picture, which is a lot of fun and this provokes a lot of discussion.
Towards the end of the book though, things change slightly. We meet the three bears again, and THEY spy Baby Bunting who they then rescue from the river. Taking him with them, they go on their way and spot a plum pie which...is all ready for a ...
