Review of The Big Sneeze - Ruth Brown by
neenn
Advantages: Introduces pre-school children to lots of animals. Beautifully illustrated
Disadvantages: None
I have this in the Big Book version and generally read it to the Nursery children or Reception in the first few weeks of term.
- The story -
It begins with a farmer and his animals having a snooze in the barn when a fly lands on the farmer's nose. This makes him sneeze so loudly and forcefully that the fly is catapulted in to the spider's web. The spider captures the fly which alerts the sparrow who proceeds to chase the spider. This wakes the ... ...all of the animals wake up and make such a commotion that the farmer's wife comes to the barn to ask him what he has done.
It ends with a totally puzzled and dishevelled farmer saying "Nothing my dear, I only sneezed!"
-Illustrations -
I have to say that these 'make' the book. They are immensely detailed and the reader gets a real feel of the barn with the rays of sun shining through the open door. The animals are superbly protrayed and so life-like ...

Jack Look What You've Done To Our World
Review of The World That Jack Built - Ruth Brown by
SandraR
Advantages: Beautifully drawn pictures that get the message across
Disadvantages: It's all too true
...daughter borrowed this book from the local library on one of our many visits and as you may well guess from the title of the book it is based on the rhyme 'The House That Jack Built'. It is a picture book which tells the story of the destruction of the environment and although aimed at young children it is quite hard hitting. The cover of the book is a beautifully drawn picture of a peaceful countryside scene. An elegant black cat sits at the top ... ...butterfly flies nearby. The book starts with the house that Jack built and shows the cat sitting on a perfectly manicured lawn in front of a small well kept cottage, the sun is shining and all is well in the world. The cat obviously lives a carefree life as we see how it plays with the butterfly, even chasing it up a tree, oh what a happy contented life. As the book progresses we follow the cats journey as it happily chases after the butterfly. The ...

Review of Silverfin: A James Bond Adventure (Young Bond) - Charlie Higson by
rowbot23
Advantages: Everything is brilliant!
Disadvantages: You can't put the book down
This book is written by Charlie Higson who also writes screenplays and adult thriller novels, as well as a performer and co-creator of the fast show. Using the idea of Ian Flemings Books about a spy called "Bond. James Bond" he has created a fantastic book about James bond when he was younger and not a spy. Before the name became a legend. Before the boy became the man. Meet Bond. James Bond. The book has 372 pages full of excitement and thrills ... ...in the Scottish Highlands, James Bond is back at Eton, where he has joined the risk-taking Danger Society. Summer vacation is on the horizon and James is looking forward to the school trip to the beautiful Italian island of Sardinia, and the opportunity to spend some time with his reclusive cousin Victor. But all is not as it appears. James soon discovers that the seemingly peaceful island harbors some strange secrets. Before long, Victor's house ...

eldest review
Review of Eldest - Christopher Paolini by
4rfvgyhnjik
Advantages: brilliant book
Disadvantages: long
Eldest opens with Eragon looking upon the battlefield of Tronjheim. It has been three days since the battle has been won, three days since Eragon killed the Shade Durza. But the mood is bleak, there is no rejoicing over the victory. The stronghold of the dwarves and the Varden - Farthen Dur is littered with bodies. So many have been killed and the battlefield is so wet with blood that it soaks through the soles of Eragon's boots. The battle is over ... ...While Eragon was essentially simplistic, Eldest is layered with other themes and multiple narratives. The writer also shows his skill in holding all of them together and blending them in the end for the climax.
Nasuada, with Eragon's support, takes her father's place leading the Varden. She decides to send Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, to Ellesméra where the elves will train them further in the arts of magic and war so that he can eventually be ...
