What shall I see?
Review of The Train Ride - June Crebbin by danielalong

Advantages: Lovely rhythmical text
Disadvantages: None

The Train Ride Very simple story with a great rhythmic structure, making it perfect as an early book to read to young children The story is basically following a little girl and her mum as they go on a train journey. The front cover of the book shows us a very simplified picture of a large red train with the driver looking out of the window as they travel through lush fields and the smoke billows out of the train chimney. We start the book and ...
...going on a journey and the next question "What shall I see? What shall I see?" She says that she sees sheep and cows "That's what I see. That's what I see". It's easy to anticipate the structure of the story. The little girl makes a statement about where they are going whether that be over a hill, under a tunnel or talks about what she or train is doing. Following this two line very simple statement, is the question, "What shall I see? What shall ... Read review

Get crafty with the past
Review of Picture the Past - Joan Chambers, Molly Hood by danielalong

Advantages: lots of ideas
Disadvantages: none

Picture the Past These publications seem to be around forever, and in fact, this one was published in 1992, so they have been going strong for quite some time. Whilst involved on a recent topic of Ancient Greece with some Upper Key Stage 2 children, I raked this out, and found it had some really useful ideas; no need for me to actually have to think about displays, just open the book, and hey presto. The pictures are of actual displays completed ...
...by full instructions and a picture of the finished make. The instructions are such that older children will be able to follow then, and because the pictures are usually quite self explanatory, younger children could have a go with minimal explanation, as long as they were given the appropriate materials. At the back of the book there are a series of line drawings, mainly relating to making Victorian decorations, and these can be photocopied, without ... Read review
