A well-loved children's classic
Review of The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Eric Carle by sheri3004

Advantages: One to return to again and again (and again......)
Disadvantages: None

"In the light of the moon, a little egg lay on a leaf…." I can recite the whole thing (well, maybe getting a little confused with the order of the different foods) and I bet I'm far from the only one! The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been around for a loooong time - nearly as long as I have, in fact, and that's ages - and is rightly regarded as a children's classic, which has been translated into over 50 languages. Apparently, a copy is sold every ...
...George W Bush has listed the book among his favourites from when he was growing up… a statement which raised a few eyebrows as he was, in fact, twenty-three when the book was first published in 1969. ~The Author~ Author and illustrator Eric Carle was born in 1929 - The Very Hungry Caterpillar is his best known book, but he has also written and illustrated many others, over 70 in total. Carle was born in Syracuse, New York to German emigrant parents, ... Read review

Review of How to be a Pirate - Cressida Cowell by ally2kc

Advantages: Adventure from beginning to end
Disadvantages: A little gross in parts

A lot more than meets the eye . . .
Review of Alice in Wonderland - Lewis Carroll by drewish

Advantages: Wonderful, enchanting read for all ages.
Disadvantages: Very weird, and a bit dated.

Alice in Wonderland was written by Lewis Carrol, the pseudonym of a maths professor called Charles Lutwidge Dodson. There is a famous story of Queen Victoria, having read Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, ordering her courtiers to bring her everything that Lewis Carroll had written, only to receive a pile of mathematical papers! Suffice it to say that there are a lot of mathematical puzzles hidden in his work, so that beneath the ...
...its references to chess). Alice in Wonderland is that rarity - a children's book that can be read on many levels. It has brilliantly crafted nonsense poetry, of which "the mouse's tale" - a beautiful shape poem in the shape of a mouse's tail, "Jabberwocky" - brilliant verbal fireworks - revelling in the enjoyment of playing with the English language for the sake of it, and the Walrus and the Carpenter (from 'Through the Looking Glass') are probably ... Those Katy Books!
Review of What Katy Did - Susan Coolidge by FriendlyLynn

Advantages: Seems to portray a close family who cope no matter what
Disadvantages: I found the problems Katy encounters with ill health much more believeable than Cousin Helen.

...adulthood. The first Three, What Katy Did, What Katy Did At School & What Katy Did Next were very definatly set to try to encompass any One of several age groups from Katy's very obvious little brother & sisters to her sister Clover who I am afraid seemed a bit to good for my taste & seemed very much Katy's shadow.. In What katy did we read of Katy, who is the oldest daughter having to learn some deep lessons about life & it's ups & downs. What ...
...life long friendships. In What Katy did next, Katy gets what for those times is every girls desire, a chance to go abroad to Europe & other countries & see the world. When I was much younger I found this Third book in the series the most compelling as it attempted to paint pictures of places that I imagned I would never get to see. Now to hopefully encourage some more lovers of the katy books I highly reccomend both Clover & In The High Valley ... Read review
