The Grass is Greener, Don`t You Bully Me.
Review of The Three Billy Goats Gruff - S. Childs by spottydog2

Advantages: Good story, nice pictures.
Disadvantages: I don`t like the troll.

The Three Billy Goats Gruff is a classic tale for children that has been around for years. Though it was one of my books as a child, it was not my favourite story as I was a little bit scared. My son loves the story though and it certainly seems popular with children. I have also seen the story used many a time in puppet shows as it is well known and noises can be used to mimic the stamping on the bridge. The Book. * * * * * * * * The Three Billy ...
...as a story book for the parents to read to the child as there is a good storyline. It can also be used for the child to read as the writing is clear and easy to understand. I would not recommend it for learning to read though as there are a few difficult words in for someone just starting. Words like frightened, gobble, troll, skipped, thundered etc. would not be in the reading vocabulary of young children just starting to read, their reading would ... Read review

A well-loved children's classic
Review of The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Eric Carle by sheri3004

Advantages: One to return to again and again (and again......)
Disadvantages: None

"In the light of the moon, a little egg lay on a leaf…." I can recite the whole thing (well, maybe getting a little confused with the order of the different foods) and I bet I'm far from the only one! The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been around for a loooong time - nearly as long as I have, in fact, and that's ages - and is rightly regarded as a children's classic, which has been translated into over 50 languages. Apparently, a copy is sold every ...
...George W Bush has listed the book among his favourites from when he was growing up… a statement which raised a few eyebrows as he was, in fact, twenty-three when the book was first published in 1969. ~The Author~ Author and illustrator Eric Carle was born in 1929 - The Very Hungry Caterpillar is his best known book, but he has also written and illustrated many others, over 70 in total. Carle was born in Syracuse, New York to German emigrant parents, ... Read review

Do you remember your first wobbly tooth?
Review of My Wobbly Tooth Must Not Ever Never Fall Out - Lauren Child by kingfisher111

Advantages: fun story and pictures
Disadvantages: none!

...do not ever NEVER want my wobbly tooth to fall out. I need it!' Charlie and his friend Marv try to explain what it is like to have a tooth fall out and the fact that the baby teeth need to go to make way for the grown up ones. Marv says it's like mooses getting new antlers. Lola is not happy about this likeness at all and states very firmly - 'But I am not a moose!' However, Lola's attitude about wanting to keep her wobbly tooth for ever starts ...
...always bring a smile to my face, particularly as I can almost hear my daughter saying the same sorts of words. I really think that Lauren Child has an ear for the way children speak and she replicates this so well. There are also many things that you start to recognise once you have read a few Charlie and Lola books. These include the wonderful illustrations on every page - sometimes hand drawn pictures mixed with occasional photos. A lot of the ... Read review

Someone's Got the Munchies!
Review of The Very Hungry Caterpillar [Board Book] - Eric Carle by Shroud

Advantages: simple text, beautiful and engaging art work, educationally fun
Disadvantages: none

~~~A bit about the author~~~ I have no doubt some people are not interested in this part, but for this author, knowing a bit about him does indeed provide unique insight into his work. Eric Carle himself as quoted as to saying that he tries to bring warmth and feeling to his works, helping to provide information as well as comfort to young children, particularly in his works designed for school use. This is because he views the transition from home ...
...child just old enough for the school system there in 1935, which was the year that saw the atrocities associated with WW II begin. Hitler was in power, and passed the infamous segregation laws, and began ensuring the children themselves received what he saw as an appropriate education that instilled "proper" Aryan values. It was a very dark chapter of history for the German people, and no doubt as a child, it gave him a double dose of the alien. ... Read review
What Pet Would You Choose?
Review of I Want A Pet - Lauren Child by belfin
Advantages: Great story in the style of Charlie & Lola
Disadvantages: none
...pet. ‘Please Mum, can I have a pet?’ Mum says, ‘Well – perhaps something with not too much fur.’ Dad says, ‘Maybe something that lives outside.’ Granny says, ‘Nothing with a buzz.’ It interferes with her hearing aid. Grandad says, ‘Stuffed pets are very reliable.’ The pet shop lady says, ‘Goldfish can be fun.’” Each adult then asks the little girl what type of pet she would like but each time she suggests something, one of the other adults ...
...family suffered because of it. I can just imagine though, some children getting ideas for all sorts of pets after reading this book and what their parents’ excuses might be. What I love about Lauren Child’s books is that they are always about using your imagination, something that is so important for children. It fuels their thoughts and makes them think about the consequences of actions in a funny way. This story is both funny and shows that careful ... Read review
