Review of Danny the Champion of the World - Roald Dahl by
britum2000
Advantages: You will learn how to poach pheasants
Disadvantages: Don't get caught poaching pheasants
Danny the Champion of the World is one of those rare books that perfectly captures the special relationship between a father and his son.Danny and his father live in an old gypsy caravan behind a filling-station, in the middle of the countryside. neenn
Advantages: A great lift-the-flap book for pre-school children.
Disadvantages: None!
►►► The book / The style and Format ◄◄◄ First published in 1982, this book, aimed at pre-school children has stood the test of time and is still popular with that age group, 26 years later!!
It is a lift-the-flap book which begins with:
'I wrote to the zoo to send me a pet. They sent me an…..'
The adjacent page has a picture of a crate with 'very heavy' written on the front. It is only when the flap on the crate ... ...that the zoo has sent, in this instance, it is an elephant.
'He was too big! I sent him back.'
'So they sent me a …..'
The adjacent page has a picture of a crate with 'Fragile' written on it with the head of an animal.

What's Under Santa's Flaps?
Review of Dear Santa - Rod Campbell by
belfin
Advantages: Kids love flaps
Disadvantages: It's a bit seasonal
...is well known for his Dear Zoo best seller from many years ago. He loves to write and design books that give a child more to do than just look at the pictures. In this book he uses flaps again and this is something that children never seem to tire of using.
***The Story***
This story begins with,
"I wrote to Santa to send me something special for Christmas."
What follows are lots of differently shaped presents that Santa wraps for the writer ... ...of flaps, which can be opened to reveal the present inside. The only problem is that Santa keeps finding something wrong with each of the toys that he wraps. From cars that are too small to paints that are too messy he gets through a fair amount before he finally makes the perfect choice.
"So he thought very hard, and on Christmas Eve Santa brought me a…"
Turning over the last flap we see a pussycat that has a furry coat to stroke.
"She's just ...

When will my perfect pet arrive?
Review of Dear Zoo - Rod Campbell by
Popalee
Advantages: short, encourages language development, fun
Disadvantages: hmm....
Given that much of my working life is spent with the under 5's I have read this book more times than most people have had hot dinners, so you may be surprised to hear that I never get tired of it- yep, I'm a 31 year old woman and I am not ashamed to say that this simple book has a firm spot in my top 10 books of all time!
What's it about?
Our narrator has decided he (I'm saying he because the book is written in teh first person and is written by ... ...zoo. The zoo then helpfully begins sending him animals but they don't quite get it right so the animals are sent back, until finally they send the perfect pet.
Rod Campbell has written other books in a similar style but for me, nothing compares to the original, as you will see below.
So, why do I love it so much?
First, it is a very simple repetitive story with just a couple of lines of text on each page, which means you can actually read the ...

michaleks
Advantages: easy to read
Disadvantages: sadness of the history
...Jewish and German boy during the Holocaust. I enjoyed this book very much as it relates to history of my country, Poland and times that should never been forgotten. This book is recommended for readers who are familiar of what happened to Jews during the Word War II. Easy to read book keeps you going with two different perspectives of two nine year old friends on what was going on in extermination camps. Bruno's innocent view on the situation and ...
