Going For A Swim
Review of Little Owl - Debi Gliori by
belfin
Advantages: lovely rhymes and pictures
Disadvantages: none
...book tells the story of Little Owl going for a swim with his friends.
"In the moonlight frogs are hopping,
Splishing-splashing, flipping-flopping.
A firefly darts above the pool,
Shining like a tiny jewel."
The story then goes on to tell how all of Little Owl's friends are first to reach the water and can't wait for him to join them.
"The water's lovely, come on in!
And with a splash, Owl starts to swim."
***The Illustrations***
The Woodland ... ...to give the pictures that little bit extra. In this book all the silver bits are there to enhance the look of the stars, insects' wings and the splashing water.
The drawings themselves are beautifully done with great attention to detail from the little fireflies right down to Owl's flowery swimming trunks. They are bright and colourful throughout and certainly catch a child's eye.
***My Thoughts***
My son has thoroughly enjoyed this series from ...

Hey Foxy
Review of Little Fox's Picnic - Debi Gliori by
belfin
Advantages: shiny board book with a lovely tale
Disadvantages: none
...tells the simple story of Little Fox and his friends as they have a day out with a picnic.
It starts,
"Carrying baskets, blankets, hampers,
here come all the noisy campers."
On the way they find the perfect spot and unpack the food and drinks, before settling down for a lovely feast. It ends with them all falling asleep in the sun,
"And all is quiet and still once more…
Apart from one small fox's snore."
***The Illustrations***
What makes ... ...any book that has a little bit extra to catch a child's eye such as flaps or touchy feely bits, so I was bound to like this one. I think that concentrating on one shiny colour is especially good for the very young toddlers who let's face it, are naturally attracted to anything bright and shiny.
Another thing that is good about the illustrations in this book is that they create a fantastic opportunity to talk to your child about the animals and types ...

Silverfin
Review of Silverfin: A James Bond Adventure (Young Bond) - Charlie Higson by
rowbot23
Advantages: Everything is brilliant!
Disadvantages: You can't put the book down
This book is written by Charlie Higson who also writes screenplays and adult thriller novels, as well as a performer and co-creator of the fast show. Using the idea of Ian Flemings Books about a spy called "Bond. James Bond" he has created a fantastic book about James bond when he was younger and not a spy. Before the name became a legend. Before the boy became the man. Meet Bond. James Bond. The book has 372 pages full of excitement and thrills ... ...in the Scottish Highlands, James Bond is back at Eton, where he has joined the risk-taking Danger Society. Summer vacation is on the horizon and James is looking forward to the school trip to the beautiful Italian island of Sardinia, and the opportunity to spend some time with his reclusive cousin Victor. But all is not as it appears. James soon discovers that the seemingly peaceful island harbors some strange secrets. Before long, Victor's house ...

eldest review
Review of Eldest - Christopher Paolini by
4rfvgyhnjik
Advantages: brilliant book
Disadvantages: long
Eldest opens with Eragon looking upon the battlefield of Tronjheim. It has been three days since the battle has been won, three days since Eragon killed the Shade Durza. But the mood is bleak, there is no rejoicing over the victory. The stronghold of the dwarves and the Varden - Farthen Dur is littered with bodies. So many have been killed and the battlefield is so wet with blood that it soaks through the soles of Eragon's boots. The battle is over ... ...While Eragon was essentially simplistic, Eldest is layered with other themes and multiple narratives. The writer also shows his skill in holding all of them together and blending them in the end for the climax.
Nasuada, with Eragon's support, takes her father's place leading the Varden. She decides to send Eragon and his dragon, Saphira, to Ellesméra where the elves will train them further in the arts of magic and war so that he can eventually be ...

Flying Penguins!
Review of Hello, This is Your Penguin Speaking - Rodney Rigby by
sewbizzie
Advantages: Good fun book
Disadvantages: None
Hello, this is your Penguin speaking is a fun little hard back book which we bought for our eldest son as he likes penguins.
The cover of the book is nice and bright and has lots of penguins all doing funny things and the title in white bubble in black writing. The back cover of the book shows a picture of space with penguins in space helmets and aliens and rockets in the sky.
Upon opening the book there are lots of small pictures with writing ... ...pictures are objects featured in the story.
The story starts with penguin reading his favourite book and wishing that he could fly. He thought that if he could fly he would be able to carry passengers. He says he would call himself Penguin Air Tours and starts running around making a vroom noise. Penguin saw that airplanes have big wings just like him and that they also have wheels which are a bit like his feet. He became very excited and started ...
