About a Boy
Advantages: Wonderfully written, full of Dahl's delightful storytelling ability Disadvantages: Over all too quickly
As an English Teacher, I come across all manner of extracts from assorted novels in textbooks - selected paragraphs of Potter, or snippets of Orwell and Huxley chosen for some part of the language they contain. However, no author seems to feature as regularly as Roald Dahl; perhaps it's because his books are especially accessible, or perhaps there's something essentially English in character about his writing. In any case, I always enjoy coming across ... ...read dozens of times before are still delightfully funny, clever and fresh. Boy is the first part of Roald Dahl's autobiography, published in 1984 and covering the first twenty years of his life. From his earliest memories and childhood holidays up to the day he left school and set off for the world of work, this memoir recounts a range of the moments Dahl remembered most fondly. There are plenty of gaps here - Boy is more of a highlights reel than ...

THE GIRAFFE AND THE PELLY AND ME
ROALD DAHL
My son is thirteen now and I don't think that he would really appreciate me sitting on the end of his bed reading him a story. But from being a very tiny child I always read to him, as he got a little older Roald Dahl were always the stories that he loved me to read, and one of his - and my - favourites was always "The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me". What makes this such a wonderful book ... ...in to join me with the repeated line "The Giraffe and the Pelly and me." As well as the - naturally - wonderful words (this is Roald Dahl remember!!) we also have some fantastic drawings from the magic pen of Quentin Blake. So while reading to the child you can also take time to study the pictures together. One more thing - and this dear reader may surprise you - in this Roald Dahl book there are NO grizzly murders and no obnoxious adults - and yet ...

ESIO TROT
by Roald Dahl
illustrated by Quentin Blake
This world would be a lot sadder place if Roald Dahl had not been around and written his wonderful. wonderful books. From his first children's book 'The Gremlins' in 1943 until his last, 'The Minpins, (published a year after his death, in 1991), Dahl's books have delighted, scared, mystified and entertained millions of children and their parents alike, and will continue ... ...I am going to review, Esio Trot, is not one of Dahl's more popular books, But it is, in my opinion, a tribute to Roald Dahl and his long time illustrator, Quentin Blake. Roald Dahl's narrative style along with Blake's creative drawings create this uniqueness that is only found from these two groundbreaking minds. Esio Trot was published in April 1990, just seven months before Dahl's death. This delightful little 80-page book is a delight for a child ...

Even Gruffalo's have children!
Advantages: an entertaining read Disadvantages: none
The gruffalo's child was feeling bored.... is she brave enough to go on a hunt for the big bad mouse? Another classic story by Julia Donaldson, this quirky tale leads on from 'The Gruffalo' where we see the little mouse outsmart the knobbly-kneed, yellow-eyed wood-dweller. Will the mouse be made into a midnight feast for the curious little Gruffalo or will he really be as big and bad as legends tell? Julia Donaldson uses her masterful rhythm and ...

A comic tale of Back-to-Front Dyslexia
Advantages: Very funny, lovely illustrations Disadvantages: None
..."nit picking") and smiled at the puzzlement or amusement of those around, then you will chuckle (and sometimes even laugh out load) at this comic tale from children's writer Roald Dahl.
Outline
The story is about the Reverend Lee. However, this young vicar's problem is not Spoonerisms exactly. Instead he suffers from a very special form of verbal dyslexia, which causes him to unknowingly speak some words as if they had been written in reverse, ... ...to increasingly funny situations.
The clergyman is newly arrived in Nibbleswicke and it seems the stress of his new position has awoken this condition. Sometimes everyday words when reversed can confer on a simple sentence a new and even rude meaning, and these are especially hilarious when spoken innocently by a man of the cloth. His parishioners experience both alarm and bemusement at his condition, and yet they begin to warm to his eccentricity. ...
