Knowing and going
Review of Oh, the Places You'll Go! - Dr. Seuss by frkurt

Advantages: Typical Seussian rhyme and a good story
Disadvantages: none

...just be me And OH, OH, the places we'll go We'll go hither and we'll go fro Over the rainbow and under a smile Making the light year seem less than a mile My own trek is one through theology Determined it feels by biology And compels me upon my wonderful way And never doubting it for a day That this is where I'm called to be This is what I'm charged to see By some much grander holy light Which may someday give me greater sight And until ...
...journey bold So that everyplace will feel like home For everyplace is someone's home Be it brown or be it blue In a castle or a shoe In the up and out the down Journeying through every town And still there will be more places to go Still more ways in which we can grow But may we never outgrow the Seuss For then, dear friends, life's not much use This is a lesser-known Dr. Seuss book, but still a great story and great learning device. Another good trick that I know...
Review of The Cat in The Hat - Dr. Seuss by gregowen

Advantages: Fabulous poem, original story
Disadvantages: nothing

...them is difficult to say the least particularly when they are tired at bedtime. Having read this book dozens of times to my 4 year old it never fails to keep both of us totally engrossed right to the very end. The way the story is written automatically makes you read it with an enthusiastic rhythm which has you bouncing from word to word and struggling to turn the pages over fast enough to keep the story flowing. I dont know why but i always seem ...
...accent. It always seems the most appropriate way to read it but i'm sure its far from how Dr Seuss had imagined it when he wrote the book. (i have no connections with Yorkshire if you're wondering). The story is told by a little boy who together with his sister Sally find themselves bored, stuck in doors on a wet day with nothing to do. Their imaginations conjure a mischievious cat (in a hat) who despite vigourous protests from the pet fish, sets ... Read review

It comes round every year, never fear, never fear
Review of How the Grinch Stole Christmas - Dr. Seuss by frkurt

Advantages: A grinch who changes, a Who who hopes
Disadvantages: Nothing here that fails or slopes

...oh so priestly But how could I forget this story How could it not get some glory For the Grinch is each of us In our cars or on the bus We go our ways and think we're not We really think we're very hot But little things can mean a lot One small voice can hit the spot And just who are these Who's who sing? What new learning can they bring? Where would we be without the tale That Christmastime will never fail For humankind will always ...
...that briefest time Community most real, sublime Regardless of your race or creed Virtue or heroic deed Or even the most evil kind Rarely will be left behind For grace will work in ways most wondrous For an event that comes most thund-rous And, albeit, unexpected Though, confessing, was expected For this is a children's tale The ending cannot make us wail And as in true prophecy, has hope Surely we won't want to mope But joy surrounds ... We Would, You Should, Have Green Eggs and Ham
Review of Green Eggs and Ham - Dr. Seuss by Shroud

Advantages: comicly funny scenarios, positive message, intro to poetic cadences, simple early vocab, phonics
Disadvantages: unwary adults unaware of the poetic meter may stumble horrifically when reading

...succeeded with the beloved classic Green Eggs and Ham. And so it was that the the I can Read imprint of Beginner Books began. The books by Seuss and other authors under the imprint made reading fun, and the use of keywords and phonics have made these popular choices for parents and teachers around the world. It should be noted that these books of Seuss’ are written in poetic meter, and they are properly read in a rhythm. Currently the books are released ...
...~~~The Book~~~ Green Eggs and Ham is a very simple story. Sam whizzes by a furry fellow on a chair and invites him to sample some green eggs and ham. The fellow refuses, and Sam is most insistent, going through all sorts of bizarre scenarios to see what it would take to get him to try the dish. Finally, out of exasperation, the furry fellow tries them and is surprised to find he DOES like the dish after all. The overall message is one of trying ... Read review

Fox in Socks
Review of Fox in Socks - Dr. Seuss by bluejules

Advantages: Colourful pictures, story is in rhyme
Disadvantages: Some of the tongue twisters are hard to say!

...he went to bed and Fox in Socks by Dr Seuss was the one he picked. I gave him a choice of Dr Seuss books but he chose this one, as he'd never heard it before. Dr Seuss (pseudonym of Theodor Seuss Geisel) was born on 2nd March 1904 and died on 24th September 1991. During his lifetime he wrote nearly 50 children's books. He was probably most famous for The Cat in the Hat, which has also been made into a film. The whole book is written in rhyme which ...
...general story line is Mr Fox is trying to get Mr Knox to lots of different tongue twisters but poor Mr Knox just cannot get his tongue around them (I don't blame him - I found some of them pretty difficult myself!) The first page introduces the story with four words and four illustrations, fox, socks, box, Knox (an unusual yellow creature). Throughout the story we meet lots of interesting characters, including chicks with bricks, Sue who sews crow's ... Read review
